-Quote from the Fairest in Changeling: the Lost
Character Livejournal: IC Stories and OOC Fun

Mask: Short cropped dark red curls and hazel eyes set in a face that's finely formed but falling well short of 'striking'. Trim, cared for physique, tanned skin, and multiple obvious body modifications (tattoos and piercings both). His typical clothing looks generally as if it could be gotten from a homeless shelter, the Salvation Army, or Goodwill; mismatched pieces that tend toward the color black and ragged edges.

Mein: What is simply a tan in his mask is deepened to a more dusky, shadowed coloration with strangely green veins and a tendency to attract and blend into nearby shadows. The fine shaping of his features and form have been subtly, delicately sculpted to seem perfectly symmetrical, striking because such symmetry is very rare, and interspersed in the curls of his hair are tiny clusters of deeply red petals of some arcane flora that give off an earthy, spicy fragrance often left in his wake.

Mantle: The air stirs around him in a cool, gentle waft that smells faintly of sweet honey and the strange bite of melting frost. More powerful or especially potent contracts are likely to invoke images of young shoots, breaking through ice and frozen ground to grow.

Character Information

Nepenthe hasn't been back for very long. There's plenty about him that's retiring, quiescent, and poignant and consequently most people haven't gotten the chance to know him well enough to ascertain details about his past. His decision to join the Winter Court seems to be very much in keeping with some palpable private sorrow he contains, though even his peers within his Court have yet to penetrate his silence on his history. It's rumored that he works as either a stripper or a prostitute, possibly both, and said that he recently took up a position with Winterbourne Ventures, Inc. though there isn't any confirmation from anyone about either.

His Keeper: There isn't anything publicly known about the being that kept Nepenthe, but what is remembered by those who encountered him remember a being of typically terrible, unearthly beauty whose entire realm was crafted of shadow and darkness. A few select also remember that this Other was fond of torture and the process of transformation, regularly altering his toys and slaves with as little effort as an artist who works with clay, and often a great deal more ceremony and artistry. Publicly, however, Cereus brother claims with seeming sincerity to remember almost nothing about his time in Faerie and Nepenthe refuses adamantly to speak of it. Ironically, maybe their sister Kaleidoscope has a more clear picture to display.

Curiatus - The people and circumstances around me do not make me what I am, they reveal who I am.

Erised - Helped him keep track of Cereus after their fight.
Bianca Snow - His employer at Winterbourne Ventures, Inc.
Nathaniel Fellows - Mentor within the Winter Court, they share a disdain of the Duchy.
Kalevala - The fourth Lost soul marked by their shared enigmatic Keeper, made to stand in the snow and watch others from afar without being allowed their warmth, he brought her home because she yearns only to grant wishes.
Lorcan Blackwood - An associate for whom Nepenthe supplies various exotics and to whom he seems to have a strange attraction, which he has firmly disavowed.
Abel Grimm - Like calls to Like. The story is too similar.
Fobosk - Betrayal is grim, but that was then, and this is now. Hunting will be more careful, now.
Johnathan Prince - "Love" is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own...
Emma Hart - She was shattered, but she was always the most beautiful. She tries so hard, but I can't help but think her heart will break when we find all the pieces again...
Julien - The glitter and glimmer of flame...there were six of them, and one of me. Then there were two of us, and he was bowing and walking away...and I was running, because I was sure it was a trick.

Familiaritas - The longest absence is less perilous to love than the terrible trials of incessant proximity.

Pawn - He's a lot of contradictions...and he's anything but a pawn.
Samantha Glass - Most Elementals don't look this frenzied, but she's...something else. Different. Broken, but put back together.
Ballerina - She's too beautiful inside...no matter what else, she's the least and most human of all of us, all at once.
Rosalyn - Winter, but forgiving...she remains the bloom, frozen in the depths, but sweet and warm all the same. Mind the thorns, though...

Cereus - His younger brother that he strives always to protect.
Kaleidoscope - His elder sister, whom he never knew was also in Arcadia.

Fastidium - He who seeks vengeance must dig two graves: one for his enemy and one for himself.

Utterbleak - Whisper nothing of him.

Renascentem - Life, death and rebirth are inevitable.

(Circa 2006 c.e.) He is said to have left Arcadia as his Keeper drifted into sleep, fleeing blindly in the gloaming dawn as the better part of the nocturnal realm in which he was imprisoned drifted into its daily slumber. Eventually, he came into contact with something he barely remembered from before...a shining, silvery hedge with thorns long enough to pierce through his entire torso and short enough to embed and hook into his skin to tear it from his flesh.

His resurgence into this world was peculiar as he looked upon his home once more...a place where he had apparently never stopped living, because there he was, happily married to a girl he had loathed while at University and managing the farm while his father looked on proudly. No going back to even that small comfort either...now he was well and truly Lost, just as he finally got home.

From there he drifted, learning quickly that it was best to remain largely unremembered except as a faint, and sometimes fond memory. He's known to spend his nights in different beds, rarely ever occupying the same place twice and remaining ever moving to keep himself obscured and hidden away. Because of this, in the year 2007, Nepenthe took his place among the ranks of the Winter Court, mentored by Nathaniel Fellows.

Since then, very little exists outside of rumor, but there are conjectures as to many, many things about this young man whose existence seems at once completely open and utterly hidden away from the light of truth. He's heard to say, "You won't remember me, but that's okay, really..." to most of the people to whom he is introduced, and in spite of the fact that his presence seems at least vaguely memorable, few people ever remember any real details about his physical appearance.

In July of 2008, Nepenthe swore a Pledge and joined the Freehold of Kansas City, known as the Crossroads as part of a pact with the Ballerina. It's said he swore to join the Freehold if she would leave the Winter Court and seek a new one...and it's also said that he swore the Pledge on his face, which he revealed to the Freehold as a show of trust. Shortly afterward, in September, he also took up a residence in a house with those who would soon become his first Motley. Finally, in September of 2008, the little draught of forgetting, the end of sorrow...Nepenthe, fulfilled his oath and obligations to the Winter court, and left it behind.

Laudare - A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.

Quotations here from PC experiences, history, etc., are welcome!

Wounds of the souls often leave the deepest scars. Yet from these wounds, a chance to forge new strengths are form. ~ Nathaniel Fellows

"Many common flowers strain for the sun at their bloom, reaching ever towards the light in their fear. The blossoms I have come to adore, however? They find their beauty in the night." ~ Lorcan Blackwood

So many of the Winter Court make me want to reach out and try to heal the hurt they feel, but Nepenthe was always sweet to me and for that, I will do all I can to see him happy again. Meredith Pocket

"A soul I am glad to have in the area. In one day he earned more of my respect and trust than almost any of my peers." - Pawn

"The darkness comes and with it a kind of peace. The peace never lasts forever. We monsters must stick together in the darkness." -Abel

"In a single day, he not only changed my world but made me want to feel something other than nothing again." - Anonymous

"I shan't blame him for his ire, my tragic brother-in-arms, and the bitter ends of our alliance. As a Harrier under the orders of Keeper, I know he could only have done the same. T'was disaster that it had to happen at all. -Fobosk Rephliarre Zurn

"How is it that by being pushed away you can be made to feel closer? If one of us must go to the sun, I am glad to fetch it for him." - Ballerina

"Even the darkest of flowers still requires light and water. Hopefully this one will come back to me for more." - Johnathan Prince

"They left me behind." - Kale Wheaton

"So sweet. Delectable. I miss the fillet of his flesh. Clay of clays. The sweet filigree etchings of pain. Perfections of perfections. Inspiring. Damning. This is not what I am anymore..." - Utterbleak

Sermonis - "The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins"

  • "All things must exist in their time, one growing into another, but each stems from a common source. The winding route traced in achieving their current location may be a cycle from one into another but certain truths remain. Desire springs from the absence of something and the desire to obtain it. Fear is born of denial, and wrath is documented time and again as a secondary emotion, always coming forth in response to another emotion, typically from loss and the recognition thereof. From winter do all things come, and to winter must they all return." - Nepenthe
  • "Fear can be a useful emotion, as is anger, because it heightens your awareness and makes you ready to protect yourself." - David Mandt
  • "I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in my life. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make someone's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a person humanized or dehumanized." - Dr. Haim Ginott
  • "It is not true that suffering ennobles the character; happiness does that sometimes, but suffering, for the most part, makes men petty and vindictive." - W. Somerset Maugham
  • "Deep unspeakable suffering may well be called a baptism, a regeneration, the initiation into a new state." - George Eliot
  • "The secret of life is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly, terribly deceived." - Oscar Wilde
  • "I suppose that eventually I will have to teach you the meaning of betrayal...you don't seem to grasp it yet." - Nepenthe

Rumusculus - "The public have an insatiable curiosity to know everything, except what is worth knowing.

"Rumored to be true"....

  • Nepenthe was once a member of the Duchy of the Icebound Heart, but left because the members were entirely too proletarian.
  • Nepenthe's chosen name has something to do with the number of individuals he has driven to the Duchy of the Icebound Heart.
  • Where another member of his family is known to be a fairly high class Escort, Nepenthe is said to be a stripper and a hooker.
  • Some people whisper that Nepenthe is a spy of the Spring Court, considering the time he spends with their Courtiers, especially having been seen with The Morning After crew.
  • Nepenthe goes out of his way to hunt down and seduce members of the Duchy of the Icebound Heart, who are rarely seen again afterward.
  • At some point, Nepenthe fell in love with a Courtier of Spring who spurned him, driving him to the Winter Court rather than the Spring Court where he belongs.
  • Nobody has ever seen Nepenthe's real face or mien, because he is constantly changing them around in an attempt to keep things confused as to his true identity.
  • The flowers in his hair are as deadly as belladonna.
  • Whispers circulate as to the nefarious habits of this secretive Changeling, talking of secret societies and death-sanctioned pledges.
  • He's athletic, but apparently also strong enough to leap twenty and thirty feet at a bound.
  • He shattered an Obsidian Elemental with his bare hands.

Praecentio - Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
