Black Velvet Rope is an American rock band formed in Orlando, Florida in 2005. It consists primarily of band members Johnny Thorn, Gwendolyn, Bengali Shirkan, and .... The band's musical style has varied over time, fusing elements of punk, industrial electronic, emo, grunge, heavy metal, and ambient sounds.

Originally confined to the local downtown Orlando club scene, the band quickly gained popularity through promotion over MySpace and YouTube, the latter of which featured their self-titled music video "Black Velvet Rope", from their album "Suicide Surprise", in the top hundred overall videos for more than 9 weeks in mid-2007, garnering more than a million views.

The band can frequently be seen at local nightclubs throughout the eastern seaboard of North America. Popular hangouts include EVO in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and The Hedgeapple in Cold Springs, KY. Once a month, the band performs live via streaming webcast, free on their website, and the performance is often accompanied by the release of a new track from their upcoming album.

On December 15th, 2007, Johnny Thorn and Bengali Shirkan were both arrested by the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department for alledgedly breaking into a research laboratory and freeing dozens of captive animals. They are currently being represented by their own attorneys and a team appointed by PETA.
