Description of the Freehold

What Meets the Eye
Bloomington is a city in south central Indiana. Located about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, it is the seat of Monroe County and home to Indiana University's flagship campus (established in 1820). It is also the home of the prestigious Indiana University School of Law, the world renowned Jacobs School of Music and Kelley School of Business, the Kinsey Institute, and the extraordinary Tibetan Cultural Center. In part due to the presence of the University, Bloomington is more diverse demographically than is typical for the state, and is renowned for its welcoming, multicultural community.

In terms of politics and government, the Democratic Party recently has dominated city politics and has retained the mayor's office since 1972. Additionally, Bloomington was the first city in the state to ban smoking in all public and private businesses, including private clubs. It was also the first city in the state to pass an anti-discrimination ordinance protecting employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Below the Surface
Our story takes place in the “Dark Heart” of forbidding Southern Indiana, in the hidden city called Bloom Town by the Goblins. A fusion of the dreams of East Asia, Western Europe, and the American Old West, this legendary locale elicits thoughts of elusive Shangri La, distant Timbuktu, exotic Arabian markets, deepest Africa, and the treacherous American Old West. This mysterious place is immensely secluded in the Hedge, situated atop a great mountain, deep within an area where the Hedge is most thick and filled with dangerous, exotic hedge entities. It would be quickly forgotten if not for rumors of deep pockets of Glamour and magical Goblin Markets, and so it draws the adventurous and curious. With a recent influx of wild-eyed, adventurous Changelings seeking their fortunes, this area has more and more permanent residents.

Some whisper softly that the richness of Glamour leads those who linger to insanity. Others say the Veil separating the world from Arcadia is particularly thin in these parts, creating a constant threat of True Fae, generating fear and mistrust. Antiquarians say that events of ancient history involving Changeling Courts and broken contracts has invoked the wrath of the very land. Those more paranoid simply point out that rich deposits of Glamour draw more things than just Changelings: unwholesome things which embody madness and evil. What mysteries, what lost secrets, and what treasures will you find?

Former City Officers

Before a large influx of Lost and the adoption of the Directional Court system in early 2008, Bloom Town had too few residents to fully flesh out the Seasonal Court system. In those days, the freehold had a unique local government arrangement with the following offices, which are now history, although the Solstitial Equinoctarian has been replaced by a Town Recorder.
