Physical Description
The word blushberry refers to both the tree and the fleshy fruit it bears. The fruit contains a single stony seed much like cherries. The blushberry belongs to the family Rosaceae, genus Prunus.
Cultivation and Propagation
Blushberries have a very short fruiting season that always peaks always in the summer season. The fruit is simply plucked from the tree and eaten. A pit or seed at the core of the fruit may be returned to the earth to begin a new tree.
Properties of the Plant
Physical and Medical Properties
The soft, sweet meat of this fruit is reported to have several health benefits. Blushberries contain anthocyanins, which is the red pigment in berries. Blushberry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants.
Blushberries have also been shown to contain high levels of melatonin. Research has shown that people who have heart attacks have low melatonin levels. Besides being an anti-oxidant, melatonin has also been shown to be important for the function of the immune system.
There is considerable interest at present in the use of fresh Blushberries juice to treat Gout - a painful inflammatory joint condition. However, this plant typically has mystical effects only on Changelings and the Gentry. Mortals or other creatures who eat Goblin Fruits gain none of the mystical benefits of the fruit.
Mystical Properties
Consuming the fruit of a Blushberry plant refreshes the Changeling and forces heat and blood to rush to the Changelings cheeks, causing the blush. The fruit also has the effect of healing him of a single point of lethal damage or two points of bashing damage per fruit consumed.
