The metals all have names and I learned them all working for the Lady of the House. Silver starts turning black and grumpy as soon as you stop paying attention to it. Bronze is a fine thing but needs encouragement occasionally or else it turns green and melancholy. Gold is my favorite. Gold is like an independent cat content with its own company. I never have to shine Gold; I merely dust it. Iron is a merciless thing and I know why the Fae stay far from this realm on account of it. It's obviously vampiric! Leave Iron to itself and it becomes coated in a scabby scale that falls away when I take my fingernail to it. Shine Iron, try to make it pretty, and it justs gets hungrier to bite into your flesh. And its everywhere. There was never this much red on the estate. This place is awash in it. I'll never shine silver again! Brass maybe, but I'll be damned if I ever polish silver again! That's why I garden.

I go by Saint Sebastian's every day. At night, when someone whispered about getting away, someone older would always say," We've shared Her table and we're bound to repay her kindness." I almost said it one night myself, but I knew it wasn't true. Eating the crackers and drinking the grape juice, sharing it with them, knowing that it's free... There are some dark things in this world. Bigger and older than I will ever be. And that's okay. I'll be ready when they come. I just pray He'll remember me before the Lady comes for what's due.
