Cavanaugh’s Home for the Wayward

Originally established by Patrick Cavanaugh in 1914 as a home for orphans and runaways, Cavanaugh’s Home for the Wayward rests in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Patrick Cavanaugh himself ran away from Ireland and together with his wife Anne, whom he met in America as an orphan, founded a home for young runaways. Their only biological son, Richard, went missing at age 16. By the time he returned from Faerie, his father was dead. Richard took over stewardship of the place in 1946 upon his return, and has since expanded the single small home to a complex of buildings nestled in Hershey. The home takes in all manner of runaways, but two of the buildings on the Ranch, as it is sometimes affectionately referred to, are reserved specifically for the Lost. Richard Cavanaugh and his Motley are dedicated both to helping mundane wayward children and Lost of all ages reintegrate into society and find their place in the world. More than a few Changelings have spent a month there readjusting after escaping the Thorns or rough patches in their life. The house is a beacon of hope in an otherwise dark world.

The Ranch sports one large building near the road, large enough to house Cavanaugh’s motley and the mundane children the Home takes in. Further back on the estate, which doubles as a cattle ranch, there are two buildings, one to house Changelings who are down on their luck, and one for those with more significant traumas to recover from. The Ranch makes money both off of donations from charitable organizations, and as a dairy farm and horse ranch. All in all, it is an idyllic place to rest and relax, with plenty of manual labor to be done for those who care to forget their worries through a day of honest, simple work.

Theme

Healing. Cavanaugh's Home for the Wayward is all about healing, or at least beginning the journey to healing.

Participation

There are four ways Changelings typically participate at Cavanaugh's ranch.

  • Guest: Many newly escaped Changelings, or simply those down on their luck, needing a place to stay, find it at Cavanaugh's Home. Whether it was for a week or a year or longer, Cavanaugh counts all those who pass through his home as his friends.
  • Patient: For some, the scars of the durance run deeper. Some Changelings escape with broken minds, or find they can't fit back in to the mortal world. Cavanaugh and his Motley keep a close eye on these poor Changelings, using a variety of techniques to help them heal and re-enter the mortal world whole.
  • Staff: Often, those who have stayed a short time at the Ranch come back later to lend a hand. Others just see the opportunity to help, and pitch in around the Home, helping Cavanaugh manage the mortal children, or the other Changelings.
  • Contributor: Cavanaugh never turns away a helping hand, whether it be one willing to offer fake ids, or leading a newly-freed Lost to the Home for respite.

Current Affiliates

  • Richard Cavanaugh - (tentatively an NPC) While not the founder of Cavanaugh's Home for the Wayward, he's been running his father's halfway house for over 60 years now. While he's advancing in age, his work lends him a vitality some younger staff members envy. He's a member of the local Summer Court, believing that the only way to stand against the Fae is to stand together, and the only way to stand together is for everyone to be healthy, whole, and prepared. While he is usually cheerful and good-natured, his ire is fearsome to those who have witnessed it. He is quick to trust, and often forgiving, but few have reason to take advantage of that fact.
  • Tristan MacDonnel- Both patient and staff member, Tristan prefers to work with the animals on the Ranch. He keeps well away from the mundane children, and is often considered one of the worse cases that Cavanaugh deals with.
  • Loch Smith - Loch availed himself of the Home's services when he first emerged from the Hedge in 1992. He is known to still seek some advice when dealing with the state of his former family, and he now teaches there and tries to mentor new Changelings. Subjects: Firearms, Survival, The Hedge, Goblin Fruit, Escape Tactics, Field Scouting.
  • Monty Kurr - One time patient, current staff member, Monty teaches those new to the world that the Hedge is a very dangerous place, and is far more dangerous to those ignorant to it.
  • Slave - After getting through the hedge Slave was taken to Cavanaugh's to help him reorient himself to this world. He learned the basics about how the world had changed but he and Richard's opinion differed on how to handle his memories. After two weeks he could no longer stay. He remains a friend of the home and occasionally drops off "Strays" that he finds wandering the hedge.
