Credna, Crafter of Treasures and Talent
This Keeper is an artist and teacher in all manners; bright, creative, stern, and visonary. His/Her gender is irrelevant and alters with no known pattern.
Students:
Credna's students are not chosen for any previous talent (raw material is much more rewarding to work with) and he does not catch them herself. Their names do not matter. They are called Apprentice and Journeyman. The male and females are bought a few years apart, to provide enough time for the journeyman student to present a knowledgeable role model and familiar presence to the new apprentice. As their skills progress, the amount of metal across their skin increases, usually from drips of molten work that become burned into their flesh, shining under translucent scars. Sometimes, though, these 'additions' are intentional cosmetic or strength related changes. Credna's training is similar to his metal working; with exposure to various raw elements of physical and emotional stress to soften and temper them. Contact with their fellow trainee provides the finer details and they soon develop variations to their Keeper's own methods. In this way, Credna increases her variety and understanding of the craft, by looking through new eyes.
What happens after they complete their journeyman training is the mystery. Are they melted down for the now copious precious metals of their bodies? Does Credna absorb their new perspective and art talent into himself to continue her vision? Do they travel to new parts of Arcadia and set up shops of their own...taking on new students of their own? Or does Credna release them back into the world, to continue their learning and increase himself, whether they are aware of the tiny beats of experience's hammer or not...?
Renn and Joe
One pair of Credna's students were the Apprentice and Journeyman who came to be called Renn and Joe. While the Journeyman was a young man with with a surprising gift for new patterns of gemstones and crystals, the Apprentice moved away from the intricate and minute and produced solid flowing pieces of bronze and copper that looked as though they formed and melted across flesh. The girl was the newer and younger of the pair, clinging to the more adept Journeyman until her flesh hardened to the heat and her ears stopped ringing from the hammer blows. They grew together, physically as well as artistically, while Crenda watched her art forms change from his workbench.
Gentry Connections to Credna
- Credna has been known to purchase from various hunters, but has a fondness for those taken by The Overlord of Manacles and Coins, as those base elements arrive readied for learning.
Lost Connections to Credna
- Beasts and Fairest may have been decorated with tokens, treasures, and trinkets from the shops of Credna and his students. They may have even brought some of them out beyond the Hedge, trophies to be hoarded or pawned.
- Darklings may have seen the finished products in the courts of dark underground kingdoms or been forced to dig at the earth until the precious metals and gems were obtained for Credna's creations.
- Elementals could have been threatened with chopping up and melting down for fuel or materials for the artist's forge or raw flame/air/water in the creation process. Manikins in particular could have sat under the artist's hammer, being decorated for special occasions.
- Ogres may have found themselves pumping bellows or hauling loads of firewood to Credna's forge, for years, weeks, or days. However long a project lasted.
- Wizened are the results of Credna's special attention. They are hardened and shaped and mentally twisted into marvelously complex shapes. They reflect the burning metal and tempering abuse of their Master's mind on every inch of their bodies and emotions.
(INSPIRATIONS: Inspiration for Crenda was drawn from the Irish mythologies of Creidhne, smith-god of precious metal working and child of Brigid. Also, from the rough and lovely works of many a Renaissance Festival artist, such as Brenda Mennenger, Michael Stewart and Rob Piland. Keep these hand-worked crafts alive, not just in our fantasies. )
