Background:

Where would you start if you were asked to document your life? The beginning? I was born, I suckled my mother’s breast, I grew up, I went to school, I kissed my first girl? Is any of that really relevant? Do you care about it? Would you prefer to know about the man I became? Does that actually matter to you either? No. You aren’t reading this because you care about where I came from, you are reading this because you want to know what I’ve done. What I’ve experienced. How I escaped. How I survive. That is why you are reading. You are reading this because somewhere in what is left of your soul, there is a fire that flares and fills you with joy at the discomfort and hardships of others.

First came a name. A definition. A title. A label. A few, a foolish few, continue with the names they had before their escape. They cling to these seemingly meaningful designations, deluded. The delusion? That they might one day truly return home. Irrational. Selfish. We cannot return to our lives. We have been replaced, forgotten or brushed away. To impose ourselves upon those that we loved, and in turn loved us is a nightmare. To do so would wreak havoc. Do you feel that urge? Do you think that you are the special one? The one that can turn the tide? Make the difference? Succeed where countless others before you have failed? Be the one to fight against reality, and win? Irrational. Selfish.

A deadlock is a situation wherein two or more competing actions are waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does. It is often seen in a paradox like 'the chicken or the egg'. A deadlock is a situation in which two computer programs sharing the same resource are effectively preventing each other from accessing the resource, resulting in both programs ceasing to function. A deadlock is an obstacle installed into doors to prevent unauthorised entry, fashioned from steel, strong, sturdy and unforgiving in the face of unwelcomed pressure. I am Deadlock.

Second came a purpose. Motleys gather. All Changelings do it. Those that attempt to survive on their own soon become a threat to the rest of us. There is strength and “comfort” in such organisations. Motleys then form Freeholds. Freeholds form structure. Structure requires Laws. Laws require enforcement. Enforcement required me. Wild gateways to the Hedge and Arcadia are dangerous places. Places that our kind have differing views upon. My purpose is simple. I keep these wild portals barren. I deny the Fae a reason to come through them. I deny them their intent. I deny them bait. I deny them food. I deny them sport. It is only with this sense of duty that I find the will to continue.

Two very simple steps to begin an existence among the Changeling courts. I have made my choices. I have declared my intent and exercise it with conviction. If I do not then not only will others suffer our fate, but I will loose myself to the power of Arcadia, a power which quickly enthrals those who seek the rapid path to ascension and revenge, or taunts us with the promise of glory and vindication.
