The Freehold of Dominion's End

Hampton Roads, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the South Eastern United States, has a lion’s share of culture, events, and history. Over 400 years have passed since the original settlers arrived from Jamestown, migrated south, and began settling into the area which now holds over 1.7 million residents, in a collection of cities that surrounds the Chesapeake Bay. One can look at its history, from the Battle of Yorktown ending the American Revolution or one can look at General McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign in the American Civil War. It holds the largest assembled naval force in the world, is home to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel, one of the wonders of the modern world.

Hampton Roads holds many other events of historical significance but not all can be found in the usual locations. No, you can only learn so much from the Library, the Museum, and the bookstore. One has to look harder, to look between the cracks of Fort Monroe, to the Casemate Museum. There you may perchance come across some fragments of the Kingdom of Old Dominion Everlasting, a name that only the oldest of Changelings may recall. A Kingdom ruled by the wise and just. The Kings of the Bay were wise and long lived. Each one was a living embodiment of the court they served and responsible for providing a sense of belonging and hope to the fae who lived. Here, they were not outcasts; here, they could live in pride and dignity. They had strength, a will to endure, and a sense of fellowship rarely found in such creatures bred by the deceitful Gentry.

As all ages are, they begin and they end. Only the True Fae are immortal and eventually such blessed and wise sovereigns passed on peacefully, untroubled by the world. Tragic as such Kingdoms can be, in the shadow of their passing so went this bastion of light, fallen into neglect and obscurity. The Tomb of Kings were lost, the old Freeholds were forgotten. The pacts of old were no longer upheld and the land has been soured by their breaking. Some attribute it to the pride of the subjects who forgot the dangers in the Hedge and in Arcadia. Some blame it on the Winter Court in its eternal sorrow during the era of the Cold War but when the shadow lifted, the great Kingdom was gone as is most of who knew it.

Here we find the fae as they exist today, as ignorant to the lands past as their own parents were to their original abductions. You can find them at Fort Story, at Cape Henry’s Lighthouse in what passes for a Freehold in these times. You can find them in the underbelly of the crime ridden streets of Newport News, of Norfolk, and of Portsmouth. They walk in fear and in doubt. For them, the dangers of the Hedge are much more recent and too real. Some whisper of the Chesapeake Bay and of dangers long asleep, returning, and no one knowing why. Others whisper of Hobgoblins that lurk along the Trods, seeking to act as Bounty Hunters to the Gentry. All understand the deceitful nature inside them and know well how to use it to survive and thrive.

Perhaps as a cruel twist of fate has allowed them to recall enough of the past that has given this land its new name, once the Kingdom of Old Dominion Everlasting, now merely known as ‘Dominion’s End’
