Background:
The story of his escape.
The day finally came, the Mistress was asleep, and it was all happening as planned. Melinda was keeping the gate guards occupied and Lothario could now walk right out the door. He was on his way to meet Raein by the brambles, once she leads him into the hedge he will be out of the queens reach and closer to freedom. It had taken nearly a year worth of planning to get everything worked out. Seducing Melinda was the key to escaping the grounds, without her he wouldn’t be able to elude the guards at the outer gate. There she was, playing her role dancing for the guards. It takes a strong woman not to flee from the mere sight of the guards much less be seductive to them. She was working hard though, putting forth all her effort in the dance she had practiced for Lothario the last few weeks and it was perfect. Her splendor was inspiring, her graceful moves entrancing. Lothario would miss her after he left, but that’s the way it must be. He could watch her dance all day but it was time to go and he couldn’t afford to be entranced. Once outside the gate the weather was different, there was a chill in the air and it felt like autumn. The Queen’s spell of eternal spring did not go beyond the walls of her estate. The change in the air was a little shocking but it was like a breath of fresh air to a man taking his first step out of bondage. It was not that far to the brambles but it could be a treacherous road for an unaccompanied slave. Lothario would have to move swift and cautious, regardless of the dangers it was too late to turn back, even if that were an option. Lothario could see the brambles ahead they were thick and opposing but they were just the beginning of the hedge. Then land between his final hiding place and the entrance ahead was open and far too visible. He was waiting for any sign of Raein before making his way into it but time was running out. Not willing to risk waiting any longer Lothario stepped out of hiding and ran for the thorny bushes. Just before he was there Raein appeared with her sword drawn. She yelled for Lothario to get down as she lunged in his direction, swinging at the man behind him. He hadn’t seen the Knight, how long had he followed him. The man was one of the Queen’s guard, The Knights, and a skilled fighter, but Raein was holding her own. Lothario had only met Raein a few weeks ago but she was special. The Mistress had The Lady of the Dark over to celebrate a recent alliance and Raein was The Lady’s attendant. She was a strange beauty but had such a wonderful presence. When the mistress arranged for Lothario to entertain her during this visit they became fast friends. It was almost like some novel whirlwind romance and at time was unclear who was seducing who. One night she came to him with a plan. They would escape she learned a path through the hedge and get could get them out. Now was not the time for reminiscing however, she was presently fending off the Knight and winning. She was amazing and he let her know. With their pursuer dispatched Lothario and Raein stepped into the hedge. The twisted plants grabbed at them like hungry children. The thorns tore their flesh and clothing inflicting torment akin to those he would face if returned to his keeper. They pushed on until the thorns gave way to thick forest with massive trees and dense underbrush. Moving through the brush was not as painful as the thorns but was just as slow. Raein forged ahead with purpose as she knew where she was headed. Lothario followed her hoping she was not as hopelessly lost as he was. He never let on that he was concerned all he would say were the little things he saw in Raein that made her special and fascinating. As they advanced, the perils seemed never ending. If they weren’t finding off the smaller creatures that lived in the hedge they were assaulted by the very plants themselves. Vines entangled their limbs, stinging nettles pierced their skin. Beautiful flowers opened to reveal horrible maws that wanted to devour them. The landscape was inhospitable and dangerous, the inhabitants were worse. One of the most fearsome creatures they encountered was the giant squirrels. Their big doe-like eyes and cute bushy tails made them seem cuddly and innocent but they were anything but. Their appearance was a ruse to weaken their prey’s defenses. They were truly rodents of unusual size. Once these monstrous beasts came close they showed their true natures and attacked with the ferocity of a mountain troll. Away from the vicious flora and fauna they still could not rest for the ground did its part to bar their escape. The paths seemed to shift under their feet. Roots and bushes hid pitfalls that called for careful treading. Raein was not so careful on one step. As she pressed her way through a thick gathering of bushes the ground gave way and slid out from under her. She tumbled and rolled down a slope desperately grabbing at the plants of which she previous struggled to break free. Lothario abandoned all concern for his own safety and lunged after Raein. He bounded down the hill side leaping rocks and bushes to get to her. He looked ahead and saw they were headed for a huge precipice and knew this moment called for an act of heroic desperation. He took hold of a vine from a tree as he passed, tied it around his waist and leaped with all his might. Raein plummeted over the edge and Lothario went right behind her. He reached out for Raein and caught her by the hand. They came to an abrupt stop now dangling precariously. It was all he could do to hold onto her and had no way of pulling them up. Raein had been rendered unconscious from the fall so Lothario hung there holding her until she awoke. She finally came around to find herself in quite a predicament but did not panic. She looked at the strain on her savior’s face and knew that he had held her there for far too long. At her stirring he told her to climb up him and the vine. She pulled herself to the top struggling with a broken arm. She made her way to safety and began pulling Lothario up and just as he neared the top the vine began to tear. He climbed, limbs weak from holding her and head dizzy from blood rush. She pulled with all her might taking his hand as the vine broke away. She cried out in pain as his weight pulled on her injured arm. He looked into her eyes and told her to let him go. At that moment she knew that it would not be possible to go on without him. She loved him truly and deeply. Then all the pain faded and she lifted him to her and the collapsed backward into each others arms. They embraced and shared kiss filled with passion but knew they could not terry even fleetly. Lothario gazed at Raein and saw a look of dread in her eyes. When he inquired as to what trouble her she said it was nothing, that they had to move and had lost too much time. He knew there was more she was not telling. The pathway down the side of the great precipice was precarious but left little room for ambushes and animal attacks. They could see down to the base of the cliff and the next challenge that awaited them. At the end of this path lay the entrance to a vast hedge maze that stretched past their view. Raein proclaimed that their journey was nearing its end. Somewhere within the maze awaited a door back to the mortal world and freedom. Raein paused at the entrance to the hedge maze with a look of concern and trepidation growing in her countenance. Lothario troubled at her dismay, took her in his arms and assured her that they would make it safely through this as they had all the others. She pulled away from his embrace and told him that it was important the he know something. The maze could prove more hazardous than anything so far and they might not both make it out. If something where to happen and they became separated he should keep going and when he found the door he would know how to escape. Most of all, she said, she loved him, truly and completely. The two made there way around twist and spirals, down long shifting corridors and it seemed like days passed. They pasted many strange sculptures both beautiful and horrific. As they came into a sculpted sitting garden Raein fell to her knees and began to weep. Lothario was confused at this but even more by her screaming at his approach. She commanded that he not come near her, that she did not deserve consoling. She had wronged him, betrayed him. She relayed to him the story of how this was an elaborate ruse designed by their keepers for their entertainment. From the day the met this story began. Lothario felt the sky pressing down upon him as his world crumbled. He no longer knew the difference between what was real and the designed by the gentry. The only thing he knew to be true was the sadness he now felt. He didn’t notice the Knight enter the garden or was it that he didn’t care anymore. Raein apologized and said she wished things were different. She did love Lothario but it was impossible to go against her Lady’s will. He did not get angry with her he only asked the Knight that he be allowed to say goodbye before he took him back. Lothario took Raein by the hands and lifted her from the ground. He embraced her one final time and whispered in her ear. I forgive you was all he said, then turned and walked back to the Knight. Then the air changed. A breeze came through the garden and the faint sound of shattering glass could be heard in the distance. Raein stood tall and confident as she proclaimed that she would let Lothario be taken. The Knight turned and drew his sword, Raein attacked. Lothario fought alongside her but she told him to run and make his way out. There really was a door in the maze and he could escape but she would have to hold off the Knight. He refused to run. They fought desperately, barley fending off the Knights blows. Thrust and parry the circled the garden struggling to keep their footing against his sheer strength. It didn’t seem as if they would be able to overcome their opponent and they grew tired. Before all hope was lost Lothario threw himself at the Knight’s legs entangling and pulling him to the ground. Raein seizing the moment plunged her sword through his armor and he went still. Taking only a brief respite to catch their breath, they made their way for the opening in the garden wall. Lothario told Raein that he believed in her and knew she could free herself from the Lady’s control. She said it was because of him, he gave her the strength. The she was cut off. Lothario turned and looked down to see the cold black blade erupting from her chest. The Knight made one last strike and it was dead on. Raein coughed up blood and collapsed. Lothario pulled the sword from her and held her in his lap. She clutched his hand as the light left her eyes. She pointed down the path; the end was a mirror shimmering amongst the hedge. Lothario laid her down and picked up the sword that took his beloved and walked to mirror. He summoned forth all the magic he had within him and touched the mirror activating the portal within. I looked back to Raein then stepped through to the mortal world alone.
