Invitation

To celebrate the return of Summer, the season of Campaigns and War, let it be known that I am hosting a gathering.

On the 15th of June, 2008, on the western shore of Loch Duntelchaig, at seven o'clock in the evening:

For those who wish to join the Summer Court in its defence of the Lost of Dunasheen, and the Market at Tomnahurich, there will be a Hunt for one of our enemies.

For those who find hunting not to their tastes or talents, there shall be games of strength and skill. More than one mention has been made of Shinty, though with the number of Ogres present, I will remind all that any sports game played during Summer does run a small risk of injury.

For all who wish to attend, there will be a party to boast of the deeds we have done and the campaigns we have waged. Any who wish may bring a trophy or a tale to share. Toasts will be offered in honour of our old heroes, and our fallen comrades, that we may dedicate this season of War to them.

As Summer is the season for turning our anger at our captivity and our thirst for revenge outward, it shall also be known that there is to be no violence with the intent of revenge or personal harm against another of the Lost during these events. If you truly must engage another in physical violence, take it to the sports field, and let the winning or losing of the competition settle the dispute.

Signed,
Aoife Lightbearer
Champion of the Summer Court
Member of the Order of the Iron Thistle

Premise background

"Compared to the other Courts, the Court of Wrath’s rituals are abundant and unsubtle. Very common are contests of physical skill. The Court is full of changelings who place great value on sheer force or ability, and it pleases them to know who is best at any given thing. Wrestling matches or mock combats are common, as are footraces, free running and climbing competitions, martial arts contests, tests of archery and marksmanship and many other competitive endeavors. Most courtiers have running scorecards in their head that tell them who has beaten whom and how many times, creating an approximate pecking order that differs for each category." -- excerpt, Changeling: the Lost

I see a dark sail on the horizon set under a black cloud
that hides the sun.

Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.

Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Bless with a hard heart those who surround me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind. Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on for the motherland.
-- Broadsword, by Jethro Tull

Race could endanger dolphins

Fears have been raised that the Moray Firth's famous population of bottlenose dolphins could be at risk from injury or disturbance from 50 powerboats due to take part in the world's toughest and longest race later this month. The 2008 Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race, featuring boats capable of reaching 75mph, is due to visit Inverness between 25th and 27th June before racing off on the Edinburgh leg. Described as the "Mount Everest" of all powerboat races, the 10-day race features celebrity contestants such as BBC Top Gear presenter James May and Nick Knowles of DIY SOS. Discussions are currently on-going between the race organisers and environmental watchdog, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), over the potential impact to the world's most northerly resident population of bottlenose dolphins, which number up to 130, plus other marine animals such as whales and porpoises.

Tourism boost from 'Ness-e' toy

Nessie — or "Ness-e" the new collectable toy — is not only selling across the globe but is doing a double for the tourism industry in the Highlands. A total of 5000 Ness-e Beanie Baby's are being sold exclusively by the Loch Ness Centre in Drumnadrochit. Since hitting the shelves on Monday, nearly 1000 of the toys have already been sold with some orders being shipped as far afield as Singapore, Japan and the US. The toy is the third addition to the centre's collection of official Ty beanie monsters which started four years ago with the introduction of Mystery, a blue Loch Ness monster. It was followed last year by Enigma and now Ness-e, which is dark green in colour, is proving the latest must-have for visitors and Beanie Baby collectors.
