A Mad God's Dream

"I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?" ~ John Lennon

It has been said that Edinburgh has a skyline for which Walt Disney would sell Snow White into slavery, so perhaps it is appropriate that in this place of beauty and darkness the Lost have found a home. Warded by the Maze, the city stands as the last fortress of the Courts within Scotland, with only the shattered city of Glasgow and the Lost community in the Freehold of Dunasheen remaining amidst the sea of Raiding Clans and Reaver-held territory.

A Note to Non-residents

It is strongly recommended that players interested in having their characters involved with the Freehold of Edinburgh look at the Edinburgh VSS. Characters claimed to have intimate links with or major involvement in the city - past or present - without such matters having been approved by the local STs will not be considered to have anything other than false memories left by the Others, confusion caused by the effects of their Durance, or mental damage sustained while breaking through the Hedge.

News

In the past few months a number of new arrivals have trickled into the city, which seems to be experiencing some degree of subtle disturbance. While the mortal world struggles under unusually high rates of seasonal sickness, some among the city's Lost have spoken of less-used paths disappearing in the In-Between and of prophetic hints of woes to come in the months ahead....

OOC News

The next game is scheduled for the 1st of April, at the RAF Club (11 Hillside Crescent, just off London Road). Doors open at 7pm. We will aim to time in around 7:30, and should wrap up for 11pm.

The ST is presently struggling somewhat with long-term illness, and apologises for the delay in responding to queries. Roderick Easton has been appointed as an AST and may be getting activated as a Legacy for that game. Downtimes will either be answered by e-mail or in person at the next game.

The Seasons and Stage-Players of Edinburgh

The Lost of Caledonia follow the common usage in the Celtic Calendar for Samhain being the New Year, and therefore traditionally begin the cycle of the Courts with Winter.

The present season is Spring, with Evie Greene serving as Spring Queen.

The previous court monarchs were Galtharion as Lord of Falling Leaves, Aleksander Sokol as King of Summer, Evie Greene as the Sovereign of Spring, and Graceful Aline as Winter Queen.

Offices and Ministries of the Freehold

Though the sovereign changes with every turn of the seasons, and Edinburgh has often lacked a formalised government, there are certain posts that have usually been filled by members of the Freehold, regardless of which season is in power. All offer opportunities for personal profit and advantage, in addition to the sometimes onerous - or even lethally dangerous - duties they entail.

Several have traditionally operated on a tax-farming basis: the holder is required to provide a certain quantity of resources to the freehold, with any excess gained while in pursuit of his duties becoming his to keep... and any short-fall having to come from his own pocket, or be explained in detail. In more recent - and dangerous - times, this practice has periodically fallen into abeyance.

Current Officers and Ministers

The Offices of Edinburgh are positions held by the Lost so that necessary duties are fulfilled.

The following are provisional postings, awaiting confirmation by the Sovereign. Should other characters wish to put themselves forward for these or other posts, please do so.

Noteworthy Locations

The Hedge-Maze

To Changelings, perhaps the most noteworthy feature of Edinburgh is the Maze. The centre of the city is shrouded in a tangled mass of stone and brick, a warped labyrinth that seems prone to change without warning and that is stalked by unusual dangers. Still, it serves as the city's greatest defence against attack from Border Reavers and Others, and provides Hollows for many Lost.

The In-Between

Perhaps as a side-effect of whatever created the Maze - or perhaps it was this that warped the Maze from whatever its original purpose might have been - the city of Edinburgh is prone to "losing" places from time to time. A seemingly-random scatter of buildings, rooms, doorways, and alleyways throughout the city all exist at one step apart from the mortal world, slipped just a little askew from mundane reality. The Lost are almost alone in being able to see and use these hidden places, known as the In-Between... but only almost.

The Innocent Railway

A site of local fable and interest, the Innocent Railway is said to provide some measure of protection against the Others, should a Changeling but manage to reach and step across its path....

Oldcastle

An ancient communal hollow supported and maintained by many members of the freehold over the centuries, Oldcastle can be entered from the In-Between near the very top of the Castle Rock. It plays host to the records of the Ministries of Cartography and Seers, and has seen hundreds of courts held by the seasonal sovereigns, as well as serving as an occasional prison, the usual base of operations for the Castellan, and the site of many of the city's most important events.
