Tell Me A Story

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea
Mermaids are chanting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Mask: Elizabeth is a young girl. She is generally unremarkable and most would consider her shy, for she does not speak when in a crowd. Exceedingly polite, Elizabeth waits to speak until spoken to and otherwise sits quietly and listens to the conversations of adults. She usually wears her hair in braids or ponytails. Her eyes are blue-grey, like the ocean in the winter.

Mein: Her skin is very pale, and crunches very lightly as she moves. Her hair moves like a quick running stream, though a layer of frost holds the stream in place. Her cheeks are rosy, from the first frost, and her eyes are bright. As always, her voice is soft, but her breath is visible in the chilly air that follows her. Despite the slight frost that covers the rest of her, Elizabeth's eyes are exactly the same as her mask - blue-grey, but without any of the changes Arcadia superimposed on the rest of her.

A Note: Occasionally, a small brown mouse in an argyle sweater and a monocle can be seen sitting on Elizabeth's shoulder, reading whatever she is working on. If you get close enough that you can hear his tiny voice, it carries the tone and snobbery of the high class British. If introduced, Elizabeth refers to him as Souris and his manners are rather impeccable. When moving, Elizabeth will gently tuck him into a pocket of her sweater or her bookbag.

Everyone is a story...

Lost to the Sea

Elizabeth was a child in the early part of the 20th century, when children were seen and not heard. On her way abroad for school, she was swept overboard during a sudden storm. Remembering her father's tales of mermaids who will save innocent children, she attempted to call for help. She thought the arms that grabbed her were her salvation...

After an endless swim, Elizabeth found herself in the court of the Duke of Darkwater, King of the Seas. At first the cthulean Duke scared her, but being a lady she could never say and show her fear. He found her amusing and chose to keep her as a pet child, to entertain him when he needed his spirits lifted and to tell him stories. He found her stories about merpeople especially amusing.

When not entertaining the Duke, she was left to her own devices in his massive castle under the sea. Another captive in the household, Althea, took Elizabeth under her wing as her own daughter, caring for and teaching her. It was at her direction that they made their escape.

Upon return, Elizabeth and Althea were assisted by Driftwood, of which Althea later took ownership. Elizabeth spends most of her time working to become comfortable in modern society and blend with the children her age. She spends her school year away from Mother at school in New York, under the watchful eye of her guardian, Merlin, and others who have sworn to give the child what the Dutchman took away from her - a chance to grow up.

Whispers of the Nymphs

Feel free to add any rumors you might wish...

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Acquaintances and Relations

A child should always say what's true,
And speak when he is spoken to,
And behave mannerly at table:
At least as far as he is able.

  • Ae Lament - Her glasses change the way the world looks.
  • Althea Sexton - Some day, if I work very hard and am very good, I hope to be like Mother.
  • Clockwork - He gave me Amy back. Anyone who can make things like he does must be truly kind.
  • Edria Meredith - When we are outside, with the trees and horses, she seems to be part of it. She doesn't fit in the city...like Central Park in the middle of Manhattan. It's a lovely surprise, but it's not quite right.
  • Elvis O'Connor - I have never met someone who knew everyone like Mr. O'Connor. If you ask for anything at all, he always knows someone who has it.
  • Erised - I think that, when I am old enough, he and I will be quite good friends. Until then, I listen to what he says and watch what he does. He is, after all, a King.
  • Francis Hudson - Mr. Hudson can teach you things you didn't know you didn't know.
  • Green Man - The cards speak to him. If he will teach me, I will learn to Listen as he does.
  • Hush - I think talking hurts him, so we do not talk. That does not mean we do not communicate.
  • Lalita Das - Ms. Das doesn't walk, she dances. When we go out, she is always being watched by people who walk by her. I think that, if normal people know at all that the world isn't what they believe, it is because they have seen Ms. Das.
  • Merlin - Have you read the stories about Merlin? Very wise. I must do everything he says. He has great magic.
  • Noman - I think the world that he sees is beautiful, and sometimes scary. Sometimes I think I can see it...but never quite like he does.
  • Penny - She's an adult who doesn't talk to me like an adult speaks to a child.
  • Horace "Race" Ardent - Mr. Race is a lovely man, though sometimes he looks like he's remembering something unpleasant. But then he comes back to now and smiles. His smile is a candle in a dark room. I wish he could see it.
  • Rattenkonigin - ...I don't want to talk about her, please. May we talk about something else?
  • Rook - King Erised says not to speak to Rook. He says that Rook does good things, but not always in good ways, and so I must not bother him. I think His Majesty is correct.
  • Suicide King - Ae says not to speak to him. She also says I shouldn't always do what adults tell me to. He seems very nice and he is a King.

What Others Say

Please feel free to add your own comments about Elizabeth.

  • "They say that believers and miracles can walk on water. My daughter is both of these." - Althea Sexton
  • "You don't need to be talking about Elizabeth. In fact? you don't need to be thinking about her either." - Ae Lament
  • "Cute kid, but christ, I don't envy everything she's gonna have to go through." - Elvis O'Connor
  • ""She, too, reminds me of someone, though I have not pieced together who quite yet. When we sit quietly, I can almost see that which was before The Machine." - Hush
  • "Sweet kid. With a little luck and the Good Lord's blessing maybe we can be sure she can get to be a sweet old lady." - Race
  • "People say she's young and innocent, but no one goes through what we did and walks away unscathed." - Doc Shepherd
  • "Sometimes one sees a reflection of what they might have been in a child's eyes. For that alone, I'd call down the heavens to keep her safe for the wisdom in her rivals that of any priestess. Such is the way of maidens." - Edria Meredith
  • "Wait for her smiles, for they do not come easily or often. Watch her in the gardens or on horseback, you might just see it. In that moment, when she lets herself go, when she swallows the burdens of her soul and allows herself to live; that is the moment you will see what all of us are fighting for." - Erised
  • "She's a good kid. What little I've seen of her, being you know, the bad example who shouldn't hang around her much. But Good doesn't change the fact that part of me finds her enormously saddening." - die Rattenkönigin
