Overview
Alias(es):
Far too many to mention. And if they were mentioned they would not really be of much use. He has gone by the names John Smith and John Doe recently. As well as by the name Flux the Everlasting which he used as Winter Mayor and has kept because he likes the sound of it.
Real Name:
No-one knows. Maybe he doesn't know himself any more.
Age:
Somewhere between 30 and 40.
Concept:
The last survivor of the apocalypse
Entitlement:
Physical description:
Small, jittery and constantly moving. Flux avoids attention as much as possible and tries to keep in the shadows and near the edge of any room he is in.
Character Information
Known History
Basic Timeline:
Flux wasn't there, then he was, then he wasn't again, then he became Mayor, then he stopped being Mayor and hid for a while.
Current Activities:
Was Winter Mayor in 2007/08 which didn't sit easily with him. Since then he has kept a fairly low profile.
Background:
Changelings native to Birmingham have often mentioned a mysterious stranger who did them some sort of favour and then disappeared into the night. Legends and stories suggest that this is one single individual, although based on physical descriptions it seems that the area is blessed with several nondescript and slightly sinister creatures who are prepared to do almost anything for anyone providing the price is right.
Older Changeings of the Winter Court have given this creature the name Flux the Everlasting, based on the fact that it is an ever changing constant, and it is believed that this is the name Flux identifies with most often. Flux is believed to be a Darkling, although most recent sightings mention insectoid features more akin to a Beast. A story was circulating in the early 21st century that suggested Flux was a member of the Fairest who had been cursed to never have the same physical form for two consecutive nights. It is believed that Flux likes this story, but that it is not wholly accurate.
Flux does not talk of Arcadia. The evidence present would suggest Flux was transformed into some sort of insect and kept in a dark place as some sort of trophy. This hypothesis would certainly explain why Flux dislikes being on show, being the centre of attention, or even sometimes being visible. Changlings who ask Flux about Aracadia usually find themselves met with a cold silence that chills everything in the vicinity.
Flux is believed to have shady contacts in the mortal world, especially with people who deal in passports, birth certificates and other documentation that can prove useful to Changeings who want to carve themselves a niche in a world to which they do not wholly belong. As well as mortal contacts, Flux is known to hold membership in the Winter Court, although as always it is not exactly clear which members of the Winter Court in Birmingham are Flux and which are not.
Motley
None.
Allies
Rumours exist that there are people Flux actually likes. Some of these might even class as allies. The following is a list of the Changelings Flux can actually tolerate for longer than a few minutes:
Enemies
Flux hates one Changeling in particular, but no-one is quite sure who and why.
Character Inspirations
- The idea that cockroaches are probably the only creature that could survive sustained nuclear war
- "Flux" by Bloc Party and "The Everlasting" by Manic Street Preachers (got to love the randomness of iTunes).
