Character Information

The Changeling known as Fortunato is rumored to be anything but fortunate. Most Lost find him to be tedious or at the very least morose. It is said that his personality is comprised of equal parts cynicism and pessimism, with a dash of irony and several heaping tea spoons of retribution. Most cannot say for certain whether or not this is intentional or merely the result of many painstaking years of service to the Twilight King. Obviously, such a combination of personality quirks lends his humor to be quite wry. It is said that those who do not understand his jokes are usually the butt of said joke. That said, Fortunato is quite determined and if one earns his loyalty and respect, he is an unwavering ally. Perhaps not the first Lost you would invite to a party, but certainly one you could count on when the chips are down.

The fact that Fortunato is a Gravewight is proof that the Fates do know what they are doing. Being raised in a family owned and operated mortuary would make one prone to being comfortable around dead people. If asked, Fortunato has been known to offer that dead people, although prone to whining, are in many ways more tolerable than the living. Again, whether or not this intentional, none know for certain. If asked about his past he usually answers, quite simply, “I buried dead things… there’s a lot of job security in burying dead things.”

All and all, Fortunato is hard to understand or sympathize with, but nonetheless he can be a staunch ally if one can earn his loyalty.

Mask: That Which is Known

Character Description: Simón (or Simon) De Soto appears to be of an average height and fairly strong build. His broad shoulders lend most to believe that he is more brawn than brains, but then perhaps being underestimated plays into this favor. He has dark brown hair, with a hint of gray and intense, almost brooding eyes that incline most to believe that he is either in deep thought or quite angry. He most frequently wears either a dark trench coat of some kind, or a lab coat. Either way, Simon is not prone to putting himself in the spotlight. And of course, last, but not least, he carries his father’s doctor’s satchel, which is often filled with various odd instruments, medicines, jars and containers.

Basic Timeline:

  • Simon De Soto is born into an affluent mexican immigrant family with two (2) sisters on September 20, 1972
  • A younger daughter/sister named Veronica De Soto is born on July 15, 1982
  • Simon's family owns a mortuary and burial service called, De Soto Family Mortuary.
  • On October 5, 1992, Simon's mother Olivia is diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
  • Simon, twenty (20) years old at the time, halts his studies and focuses on Oncology.
  • November 3, 1992, the Twilight King abducts Simon.
  • On October 6, 2003, Simon escapes from the Hedge.

Current Activities:

  • Simon is currently living under the name of "Gabriel De Los Santos."
  • Simon was recently hired to be the Assistant County Coroner for Santa Clara County (Graveyard Shift).
  • Simon frequently "visits" his younger sister, Veronica De Soto, who is attending college at the University of Calfiornia at Santa Cruz
  • Veronica believes that her brother Simon died in the fire that killed her family some eight (8) years earlier (01/13/95).

 Nightmares and Dreamscapes

Character Description: Fortunato is distinctly different from Simon De Soto; the most noticeable fact being is that he is significantly darker, almost pitch. His warm skin tones are replaced by a color that appears similar to polished onyx. This stark change in his skin tone causes an exaggerated effect in his eyes as well, transforming them from intensity to outright savagery. His attire although somewhat similar to that of Simon is even more austere, with just a hint of the maudlin. Dark suits, stark white shirts and black leather gloves are his most preferred choices. The hint of gray in his hair is much more prominent, in some parts even appearing stark white. Finally, his Mantle manifests itself in the form of an icy chill breeze that is immediately followed by a rolling mist-like fog that bears the faint scent of freshly turned soiled. And although it is not entirely unpleasant, it does give off the feeling that someone is walking over one’s grave.

Abducted: November 3, 1992 by the Twilight King

Mantle: As noted above Fortunato's Mantle is manifested by an icy chill breeze that is immediately followed by a rolling mist-like fog that bears the faint scent of freshly turned soiled.

Basic Timeline:

  • Simon De Soto is given the name "Fortunato" by his cruel keeper; The Twilight King.
  • Simon is so named "Fortunato" for two reason, first and foremost, the Twilight King forces him to perform the menial task of digging graves for his victims. Secondly, Fortunato was buried "alive" by the Twilight King as a means to bring him into Arcadia.
  • Fortunato toils under these hateful conditions for an unknown period of time.
  • During his time with the Twilight King, Fortunato becomes exceptionally gifted in the means and ways of fear.
  • Fortunato encounters the Darkling, Tunnelgrub known as Tinsel. Tinsel reveals a secret path through the Hedge so that Fortunato may return to the Mortal World.
  • Fortunato makes good his escape only to find that most of his family has died in a fire. All that remains is his younger sister Veronica. More than ten years have passed in the waking world.
