Hachua'bsh

From Changeling Venue

As far as any member of the Changelings in Seattle can recall Hachua'bsh was the last Native American to be active in the city. While no doubt many other Changeling have Indian and even local Indian blood they were not raised in an environment free of almost all Western Influence.

Hachua'bsh served as the medicine man spiritual leader to local tribes in the late 1800's but separated himself completely from that dying society in the 1930's to better serve the Changeling of Seattle. He never joined any of the Courts or Motleys of the late comers and up until the 1960's was merely tolerated in the area. However rumors persisted of strong personal relationships with a number of individual Changelings, including a powerful friendship with Dame Belladonna. As times changed, so too did the attitudes of the Lost of Seattle. By the 1970's he started serving as an adviser to the Courts and in 1973 agreed to teach his wisdom and knowledge to the "pale newcomers". By the time of his death in 2003 he was a venerable and respected part of Seattle tradition, although still a mystery to many.

Hachua'bsh believed that experience was the best teacher, so unless he thought a course of action was inherently fatal he would seldom offer any opinion even when asked. His thoughts on Adamant's Folly were unknown. The death of his long-time pupil Silver Salmon during the march was very hard on the old Medicine Man, and even though he immediately took Dr. Fouyr as a student to replace him, those who had known the old healer were secretly alarmed at how old he suddenly appeared.

He was often critical of the fickleness of the Western Fae as opposed to the older native creatures. "That which was true for my Grandfather will be true for my Grandson," he would say, although if he had any grandchildren he had surely outlived them. Westerners were too inconsistent in their superstitions for his tastes.

In late 2003 he said his good byes to the few Changeling he regarded as friends, and apologized to Dr. Fouyr that he could not stay any longer. The call of his ancestors was simply to strong and Fouyr would have to make due with his brief apprenticeship. It is said that he simply walked into the Hedge and disappeared. If Dr. Fouyr knows more, he has said nothing on the subject.
