"Teenage Wildlife" - Appearance

“Look in a mirror and one thing's sure; what we see is not who we are.” - Richard Bach

Hannah's Mien:

Hannah Mien is that of a teenage girl dressed in 80's punk/new wave fashion. Her face, while very familiar, isn't distinctive - as if it were a composite of features taken from dozens of different girls her age. Hannah's features seem to blur slightly as her attention wanders, and vanish completely when she gets too emotional - leaving behind a featureless, reflective form surrounded by a misty haze. Her only consistent feature are her eyes, which are deep-set, silver orbs that swirl with smoke until they are stared into, at which point they clearly reflect the faults and imperfections of whoever is gazing into them.

Hannah's Mask:

Hannah's mortal Mask is slightly taller than her Mien and a bit more androgynous. Like her Mien, Hannah's Mask lacks any truly distinctive features.

The Hedge

When Hannah travels in the Hedge every mildly reflective surface becomes like a mirror and silvered-shards of glass appear to grow out of the local foliage. All showing distorted and often tormented faces in their surfaces. Often a thick fog rises up around her, trailing in her wake.

"Don't try to fix me / I'm not broken / Hello, I'm the lie living for you so you can hide." - from Hello by Evanescence

Hannah was born in the suburbs of Chicago in 1971 to a fairly ordinary, middle class family. She doesn't talk much about growing up or what her childhood was like, believing that living in the past gets too many changelings into trouble. She was taken by the Others in 1987, just a few weeks after turning 16, and has only recently escaped back through the Hedge in early 2007. As such, Hannah dresses and talks like a typical 80's teen though she's trying hard to get 'caught up' on what she missed while she was gone.

What little she remembers of her time in Faerie is very fragmented and unclear, though she does know the name of her Keeper - The Marquis of the Myriad Cast in Mockery - but never, ever mentions him by his full name. When she must she refers to him only as 'The Marquis' and even then talking about him makes her uncomfortable. Hannah recalls being imprisoned behind a mirror in Faerie and forced to take on whatever shape her Keeper desired to see. She knows she was freed during the Red Nettle Revolt and fled into the Hedge while being pursued by Fragile. She was lost in the Hedge for what felt like hours before Fragile confronted her and the two came to an understanding. When hey made it back across, Hannah found that she was hundreds of miles from her home and that twenty years had gone by in what she experienced as only a few months.

Since she returned, Hannah's been spending most of her time making a new life for herself. She tends to be very involved in her 'normal' live and her connections with regular people. Not that she avoids the local freehold or what she is, but courtly ambitions just aren't high priority for a sixteen year old girl trying to make sure she can get by without starving. Luckily, Hannah has a way with people and has adjusted pretty well and knows she can always count on the rest of Thursday's Children if things get bad. People just seem to like her and want to help her for no real reason. Or at least no reason she's willing to admit.

Hannah is very committed to the ideals of the Spring Court and while still learning to be more eloquent, definitely has a flair for life and living in the now that make her right at home in it. Since her return she's been seen as an up-and-comer within the Court of Desire and has worked hard to help the Lost around her adopt her 'clean slate' attitude and make the most of the lives that are once again their own.

Outside the Antler Crown, Hannah is well regarded by all the other Courts. Many believe if it were not for her refusal to become another face in the crowd she would have joined the Silent Arrow and served them well. They also think that, in time, her youthful exuberance will fade away and she'll join the Onyx Court without regret. Of course those within the Summer and Autumn Courts have their eye on her as well knowing that she's more useful than her appearance and demeanor reveal at first glance.

This opinion stems from the fact that Hannah seems to know more about her time in Arcadia, others she met there and the Night of Red Nettles than she lets on and that whatever she does know she's keeping to herself for the time being. She always seems to be more insightful and knowledgeable on Fae matters than people expect given her flighty nature and perky attitude.

“Mirror Mirror on the wall, Do I know myself at all?”

Not all that long ago, there was a boy who had grown up never feeling right in his own skin. Ever day he would look into the mirror but never recognize himself; for who he saw never looked like who he felt he should be. For as long as the boy could remember he did not want to be a boy at all, longing instead to be a girl as that was how he saw himself in his dreams.

So it was that the boy tried to become the girl he knew he was. He dressed and acted as a girl should, but his schoolmates took notice and made fun of him for it. They knew who he really was and they would never let him forget it. So the boy shied away from them all hurt deeply by their cruel taunting; always wondering why no one could accept him for who he was.

In time the boy found friends who accepted him as they brought the girl he was out from hiding. But in the back of his mind, the boy knew he'd never be a real girl and that ate away at him. When he saw his real face he would turn away in tears knowing that it would never look right to him. Though he was free to be himself around his friends, other times he felt he had to hide behind the mask of a young man rather than face the world as the woman he wanted to be.

Then, one day the boy was careless. He went out with his friends in the guise of a girl and they had a wonderful time, but when he returned home his father was waiting for him with regret in his eyes. The found had discovered what the boy was hiding and he did not understand and did not want to. The two argued and the boy's fate was sealed his by his father's anger and ignorance; the boy was was to be sent to reform school far away from his home, his friends, and his misguided notions.

Outraged and heartbroken the boy knew the only way to escape his fate was to run away from it. So he did. Days later he found himself cold, tired and alone, in a place he'd never seen before without any thing to eat or a place to sleep. He curled up in a alleyway to try to rest but the chilled winter air would not let him find his peace. As he wondered nervously what to do he noticed a door in the alley that he didn't remember seeing. It was open ever so slightly and looked awfully dark inside.

The boy knew he had to find shelter and hoped the place was abandoned why else, of course, would it be left open and unlocked? So he made his way down the dreary alleyway to the door, and with only slight hesitation pushed it open and walked inside. He stumbled around in the dim, fading light of day and finding no one around. So heavy were his eyes that he put his fears of being found behind him and curled up in back corner, drifting quickly to sleep.

But the boy could not rest. His dreams were plagued by a feeling of sinking very slowly and of briars scrapping against his skin. When he awoke sometime later the was a faint light in the room. Startled that someone was there he curled up and tried to hide. But he heard no footsteps or other commotion so his curiosity started to get the better of him. Cautiously he moved towards the light which was coming from what seemed to be very far across the room.

When the boy made his way to the source of the light, what he found was a tall, slender object covered in a dusty old sheet. From beneath the sheet a faint light could be see like that of a candle. For a moment he paused, as a feeling of uncertainty washed over him, but he had to know what was hidden beneath the cloth covering. In one swift motion he pulled the linen covering off to find a ornate, silver mirror beneath it.

The mirror was as tall as he was and quite well made, it seemed to shine unnaturally bright though no light was cast upon it. The boy was so stunned by the beauty of the mirror that he had to see himself in it and briskly circled it to view his reflection in it's surface. But what he found there was not pleasing at all. In the mirror he seemed to see all his faults exaggerated in haunting ways. He saw all the things about himself he could not stand all those little flaws elaborately worsened.

The boy was so upset by what he saw that he flailed back wildly, stumbling over the discarded sheet and falling into the mirror which struck the ground with a loud, ominous crash as it splintered into a thousand malicious shards. Lying there, cut and bleeding, the boy felt as if he was being watched. Alarmed and in pain he turned to face whoever was behind him only to see the last person he ever expected to see - himself.

There the boy seemed to stand over himself, cast in the visage of the twisted reflection he'd seen. This mockery looked down on him with emotionless eyes and crouched to meet the boy eye to eye. His disturbing duplicate spoke in a hollow voice telling him that he had broken something worth more than his he'd ever know and that the price he'd pay would be worse than a turn of bad luck.

Before he could speak in his defense the boy's doppleganger reached for his face and the boy felt a horrible pain course through him as the monster before him pulled the features right off his face hold it aloft in his hands as the boy's hands rushed to find a smooth, featureless surface where his eyes, nose and mouth had been. He tried to scream to no avail as his sinister duplicate made a sweeping motion his hand calling up the shards of glass from the ground and coalescing them into a roughly man-shaped form.

Upon this strange glass-man the boy's unnatural double hung his face and paralyzed with fear the boy watched as the glass-man became another copy of himself. This one looking more like him that he could believe was possible. as he struggled to make sense of it all and cry out for help his wicked duplicate cackled madly and grabbed him by the neck - and shoved him violently in the now empty silver frame beneath him.

The boy fell into endless darkness for what felt like an eternity; his anguished howl unheard by anyone save his Keeper, the Marquis of the Myriad Cast in Mockery who reveled in the sensation faintly echoed in his newest servant's stolen countenance. The boy was no more - only the servant remained.

When the servant came to, it found itself trapped within a prison of endless darkness eclipsed only by a slender, glass window from which it could see a large, lavishly decorated chamber adorned with paintings and statues of people being tormented; all of them without faces to express their agony. There it was a plaything of his Lord, forced by his whim to take the form of whatever he wished to see. At first the changes were painful and the Marquis delighted in the range of horrific sounds his servant's flesh would make as it struggled to redefine itself. But as time went on, the servant's body malleable and painless.

So it was that Marquis tormented his plaything in other ways, forcing it to become what it had always longed to be but in the darkness the servant could not see itself despite knowing what it had become. When the master tired of this, he could have the servant shaped in sadistic ways to test the limits of its body; his horrible yet poetic descriptions were matched by the servant's form flawlessly. Sometimes he would even show off this shapes he twisted the servant into to others of his kind, as if showing off a newly created sculpture.

The servant had little reprieve but when it did it scoured the ebony depths of his cell desperate to find a way out. In the nothingness it could hear voices sometimes, distant and faded, but it listened and learned. It waited and tried to remember what it was and who it had been. It couldn't remember it's name or what it looked like, but it remember little bits and it clung to them desperately to retain a sense of self.

Days bled seamlessly into weeks, weeks into months. Then one day the servant heard a horrible noise and rushed to it's window to see what was going on. There it saw a some people, or what were once people like it had been, fighting against the Marquis's faceless ivory guardians. Desperately it thrashed against the glass window with it's weak fists. It knew this could be it's only chance to escape and it would not let it pass. As it struggled seemingly in vein, beginning to believe it's efforts was hopeless - one of large, brutish half-men tossed one of the guardians over it's head and into the mirror, shattering it.

Suddenly, the servant was free. It aided those who destroyed it's prison and fled with them as braved the twisted courtyard of the Marquis's estate and the dangers of the Hedge beyond it. As they ran the servant fought to remember it's home. It's life before all this and most of all, it's true face. With every ounce of strength it had it pushed on and fought to reclaim itself. Then, the servant found the memory it sought and came crashing back into the world it had once known.

And as this new escapee from the lands of Faerie lie there quiet and still it realized it's face was forever gone. But it would have a new face as it had learned more than the Marquis had expected. The boy was no more, and the servant was free. Now all that remained, was the changeling it had become...and she became known as Hannah.

"She wasn't able to pry an apology or even a thank you out of the Summer King of Rome for his derision of my services. She forgets she can change shape at a whim. She wears clothes from decades ago that make her stand out. Calling her a disappointment is less an insult and more a statement of fact." - David Burke

"Oh yes, Hannah seems like such a nice girl. However I've looked into her eyes. That said, I like her more for it." - Mallory Schadenfreude

"Hannah is, so very, my BFF. There isn't anything I do that isn't better for sharing it with her." ~ Holly Poppet

"Hannah can be counted on, in fact, she is one of the few people I trust, inside or outside the hedge, I mean, she did save me from myself after all..." - Schide

"Sweet girl... if a bit confusing. The hug was a surprise... still, sweet enough girl." - Gaius Arctorus

"In the theatrical profession we had people known as stage managers. They are the people who in essence run around insuring that the show will go on. They keep the actors sane, the director calm, the producer informed (or misinformed), the stage hands on their toes, and making sure the theater doesn't burn down or the audience riots. Hannah is the Sepulcher's stage manager." - Captain Adonis Von Catterwaul

"She doesn't hide very well...brighty bright bright...like a neon sign." - Ashe

"Bad Reputation" - Rumors

Please feel free to add rumors to this section.
  • Hannah's Keeper watches her through her reflection and spies on his errant servants through Hannah's mirrored eyes. In fact, he may well have let her go for that every purpose - to keep an eye (or two) on the movement of Changelings outside Faerie.
  • Hannah has a very strong aversion to full length mirrors and pitch black darkness.
  • Hannah doesn't like making eye contact with people - because she sees what's reflected in her eyes as clearly as those looking in them would.
  • Hannah's whole persona is an act, something to cover up an identity so deeply hidden even she may not remember it.
  • Hannah's afraid to actually to change her appearance because makes her too much like her Keeper.
  • Hannah isn't neither a Mirrorskin nor a Whisperwisp, but some other, stranger Kith.
  • Many Lost think Hannah is part of the House of Rhapsody, given her reflective eyes, sometimes blurry appearance, and the small mirror she wears around her neck, though she denies it vehemently.
