There be those who say that things and places have souls,
and there be those who say they have not...

The House

There, in the clearing, stood a house that seemed to be made of angles that were somehow wrong, and when you tried to puzzle it out, the odd geometry only further sought to confound you.

The members of the House of November Leaves primarily reside within a large, and complex Hollow, which they all call 'The House'. The outside of the House appears like a large, Victorian structure, which has become ill-kept over time, and the grey paint has begun to peel. However, staring too long at the House, and it seems as though there is something vaguely and horrifyingly wrong with it, like it is a place that simply should not be, a place that seeks, through mere existence and some perverse application of geometry, to defy the laws of reality through the sheer will of the House itself.

The interior of the House of November Leaves appears normal at first, however, the longer one stays within, the true nature of the House manifests and becomes apparent. Traveling within the House is as easy as walking about, however, one quickly realizes that the interior is quite malleable, and just because a doorway or hallway led to a room once does not guarantee it will do so again. This frustrating maze work of corridors and rooms seeks to confound those whom have not spent considerable time within the House and the labyrinthine configuration. Those whom live within the House find no difficulty in navigating through the various rooms, often seeming to subconsciously walk through just the right door to their destination.

No one, not even those whom are attuned to the strange geometries of the House, knows exactly how many rooms are within. Those that have spent considerable time within the House have found that new rooms appear and sometimes disappear, with odd frequency. Some have also noticed slight chronological distortions, where one might enter a room for a few moments, only to emerge and find that elsewhere in the house, hours may have transpired.

  • The House of November Leaves appears in a footnote of a paper on Non-Euclidean Geometry, by S. Carter Needs, published in 1972. The work cites not only the House of November Leaves, but also speaks of the House on the Rock, and the Winchester Mystery House. It should be noted that, the locations for the House on the Rock and the Winchester Mystery House (Spring Green, Wisconsin and San Jose, California) are listed in the work, but the House of November Leaves only receives a minor note, and no listed location.

Inspirations

Come here, Pretty please
Can you tell me where I am
You won't you say something
I need to get my bearings
I'm lost
And the shadows keep on changing
-'Haunted' by Poe

The epistemology of the house remains entirely commensurate with its size. After all, one always approaches the unknown with grater caution the first time around. Thus it appears far more expansive than it literally is. Knowledge of the terrain on a second visit dramatically contracts this sense of distance. Who has never gone for a walk through some unfamiliar park and felt that it was huge, only to return a second time to discover that the park is in fact much smaller than initially perceived?
-'House of Leaves' p. 166 (Mark Danielewski)

Only the silent, sleepy, staring houses in the backwoods can tell all that has lain hidden since the early days; and they are not communicative, being loath to shake off the drowsiness which helps them forget. Sometimes one feels that it would be merciful to tear down these houses, for they must often dream.

- H.P. Lovecraft, 'The Picture in the House'
