Basic Timeline:
Ian was born at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin in 1925, and was a young lad hopeful of entering the medical profession; unfortunately, his parents died in a train accident when he was a lad of a mere 15, so Ian had no choice but to find a trade; it didn't take him long to find work as an apprentice to a Dublin butcher. The work was far from glamorous, but it provided Ian with the basic necessities of life; he never gave up his aspirations for a better life, though, and stayed in school through his leaving cert; his scores were promising enough to merit a placement at Trinity for Medicine. Little did he know that his skills with a butcher's blade had attracted attentions of a creature from across the Hedge.
Ian was a serious young man; he had forsworn drink from an early age, and hadn't touched a drop, until he met the Red Haired Devil Woman. She kept coming into the shop, asking for difficult and precise cuts; Ian had resented her demanding nature; she seemed to take great pleasure in complaining to the butcher about every little imperfection of his work. Naturally, the butcher gave her the meat for free, and took it out of Ian's pay.
His temper got the best of him one day, and he let the bone saw slip sideways when he was cutting some fresh mutton; the blood spray made its way over the counter, and splattered lightly on her cheek. She simply smiled an evil smile, licked the corner of her mouth, and wiped her cheek off. She never complained about the meat again, but she came in every day, near the end of business. Ian couldn't help but be curious, and he followed her down the side streets in Temple Bar one early evening, abandoning his work. When she ducked into Fitzpatrick's, he followed her. The experience itself, or perhaps just her profound oddity had unnerved him, so he ordered his first pint, and watched her at the other end of the bar. One pint became two, became three, became ten. When he thought she left the pub, he went stumbling after-- and when he thought he had her cornered in the alley, he didn't realize she had lured him there all along; thus began his slavery, in which he would serve as the butcher in her grisly Abattoir.
She favored the meat of the young girls; they were usually dead by the time that they were given to him. He was left only the scraps of what he slaughtered to eat. She never grew older, but time seemed to pass without end in the hellish existence. His carving skills were all that kept him alive, as he prepared her real meals, the children who would wander into the Hedge, or those she would steal. He toiled for what seemed a lifetime; the hunger he developed for flesh grew, as he became desensitized to the suffering of the food. Ian reasoned that he had no option but to survive-- and perhaps escape when he had gained her trust.
Ian was usually kept on a leash when they were in the deep Hedge; little more than a hound, to be set upon whatever had wandered its way too far into the world of the Fae. Her hand grew lax at times, and he might have tried to slip his leash a hundred times, but never did; if he was to escape, it would be after she was certain he would not.
Killed his fetch- June 1959, by arranging an auto accident; breaks own leg after disposing of the body, and cuts himself to have appropriate wounds from an accident; spends a year recuperating and 'recovering memory' from head trauma. Ian has worked for the state as a child services worker ever since; nearing mandatory retirement age.
