Premise
In the waters of Long Island Sound is a place that doesn't exist... to a world that doesn't know how to look. There are many ways to get there, by chasing a concept instead of following a map, and many kinds of people who have come to belong there... but only if you know how to look, and how to find that which has been Lost. On this island, shielded from mortal eyes and hidden from mortal authorities, a rag-tag group of people have come to live whatever lives they can make for themselves, assembled into whatever kind of community they can use to deal with each other. Liars, thieves, murderers... rabble, all... have been welcomed onto this island, so long as they can live in something resembling a civilized fashion upon it.
Welcome to the Isla del Perdido... the Island of the Lost.
Theme
The Isla del Perdido is a place for those who have somehow fallen between the cracks of polite society, or otherwise found a sense of community away from the watchful eyes of Big Brother. The Lost have a sense of community all their own, and it is an outcast indeed who would practice lawlessness even amongst those who are the only ones you can truly call "Friend" in a world where no one else would believe what you have seen in this life, and in the realms of Faerie to which it has taken you. While it's true that this is a place where smugglers and thieves and whores might revel, it is not itself a lawless place closed far from the eyes of polite Faerie society... it doesn't really have laws or rules, more along the lines of guidelines really, but it would be a foolish Fae indeed who would turn against his brethren here in this last bastion of society before one is well and truly Lost to the society of the Fae.
Here the law of the land is "do unto your neighbor as you would have them do unto you", in the most literal sense of the phrase... be polite and you shall be treated politely, so that even the most high-browed Fairest can walk in this place and be well pleased with its society (so long as he holds his nose, that is). Murder, rape, or steal, and you can expect to be murdered, raped, or stolen from... the Golden Rule enforced by the society as a whole rather than some strong-armed force of the police, because this is a place where each man and woman is well and truly your brother and sister through the pain of shared experiences and shared plights. You can find nearly anything here if you look hard enough... strong arms that don't ask questions, professional thieves and smugglers, identity doctors as well as true medical professionals... living truly free away from the prying eyes of mortal society, for those who don't want to have to fit in with the mortal world all of the time now that they have been so deeply changed from the truly "mortal".
Around the Island
Nemo - Smuggler, ruffian, and a gentleman of sorts... Nemo stumbled upon this place when escaping from the Hedge in the end of the Red Nettle Revolt, with the assistance of Rigger, who found him and helped him through the Thorns. Nemo has been the most vocal about bringing people to this place and making it a home, where everyone can be themselves... so long as "themselves" is something that can pass for neighborly in a lawless land of rogues and undesirables.
Rigger - A doctor practiced in the medicinal craft, and an explorer of the Hedge who loves the taste of the Goblin Fruits on the many paths strewn beneath the Long Island Sound.
Calico Jill Harkness - Pirate, space alien, confidante, cat... a complicated woman.
Clockwork - Keeps a room on the island for ease of business. He's been known to take escort, fetch, and identity jobs, and he can be seen having a stiff drink now and again with Rigger.
Erised has been known to spend a night over on the island every once in a while... he and Nemo maintain relations that keep the Isla del Perdido recognized as a safe place for any of the Lost.
Ulysses 'Cudgel' Carter - Who do you turn to, to enforce the law in a lawless place? Rather than swear Oaths, something the residents of the Isla del Perdido might not be willing to do, there's a rule that says "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Rather than be hypocrites or discuss endless cycles of violence as people do unto and are done upon, Cudgel will be the one tasked with the chore of "do unto you". Don't make me call him down here to go medieval on your ass, he's not a very cheerful soul and it don't make us too happy neither to have to pay him to whup you.
Salom, The Summer King is sometimes strangely seen at the place. While his more noble beliefs sometimes clash with the local color, his blades can be for hire when the target is a Loyalist or Privateer. He does like the drink here.
Current Affiliates
- The Innkeepers – Alike in spirit if not necessarily in formal politeness, Nemo is keen on maintaining some connection with this network of inns, especially that of Erised in New York City as the nearest "polite" Inn, Reverie.
- Apple Clinics - A more formal medical clinic that lies beneath Reverie, and the best place to take an injured Fae if Doc Rigger isn't around as the path to New York City is shorter than to anywhere else.
Regular Visitors (Past & Present)
Nothing - A feral silent oddity, she is often found in the company of Hush, following Nemo around, or staring at the water.
Hush -
Laurel Thorn -
Lelland - Captain of the Bane of Thetis
Inspirations
The smuggler's cove is intended to be a community of undesirables who find some way to live together despite being far outside of polite society, and is inspired by the island pirate town of Tortuga from Pirates of the Caribbean... which is of course based heavily upon the reality of the island of Tortuga off the northern coast of Haiti and the piratical practices of its population throughout much of the seventeenth century. A community for those who otherwise would not be welcome in one, this seems like a perfect theme to play upon for the Lost... especially those who don't fall within the dichotomy of black and white but instead lie along the spectrum of the morally gray.
