Physical Description

Jarmyn is an age-old herbal drink that continues to be the beverage of choice for those traveling alone or in small groups within the Hedge. Jarmyn grows abundantly in the sun-drenched island pockets of the Hedge. Although drank for centuries by the Hedge beast islanders, it was only during Changeling excursions into the Islands in 1768-1771 when white man first encountered the plant and its consumption in sacred ceremonies. According to local lore, natives chewed or pounded the root and mixed it with water to produce a brownish, often bitter brew which they then consumed for its psychoactive properties.

Properties of the Plant

Physical and Medical Properties

The raw fruit can have a somewhat bitter taste, but becomes tender when cooked and develops a rich, complex flavor. Salting and then rinsing the sliced Jarmyn (known as "degorging") can soften and remove much of the bitterness. The Jarmyn is capable of absorbing large amounts of cooking fats and sauces, allowing for very rich dishes, but the salting process will reduce the amount of oil absorbed. The fruit flesh is smooth; as in the related tomato, the numerous seeds are soft and edible along with the rest of the fruit. The thin skin is also edible, so that the Jarmyn need not be peeled. A member of the black pepper family, Jarmyn’s active properties stems from the Jarmynlactones found in its roots. The roots are dried then pounded into a powdered form.

Mystical Properties

Eating the fruit of a Jarmyn, alleviates the dice pool penalties for actions taken during extended periods of activity for the duration of the scene in which it’s eaten. Jarmyn leaves are stimulating, and add three bonus dice to the roll for a character to stay awake after a period of extensive wakefulness.

OOC Information

Jarmyn is a Goblin Fruit that is explained in White Wolf's Changeling: The Lost book on page 223. I found a real world equivalent to Changeling’s Jarmyn was the South Pacific Kava Root and the flavored text above I included based on the information we have about the real plant.
