Background:

There had been a girl that had been the love of his life. As a young child, Julio dreamed often of winning her heart and living happily with her forever. Sadly Julio did not believe that he would ever be worthy of her love. So he cried himself to sleep on the bed of a creek near the vineyards where his family lived and worked. Now Snake, who had lived in the area for more seasons then any of Julio's family heard the boy’s weeping and spoke to him. “What are you crying for, Chavalo?”

By the time Julio had finished telling his story, Snake had begun to weep. Though Julio did not know that Snake was only pretending. Snake was always a trickster and he had decided he would play a trick on Julio. “Órale, Carnal! That’s easy! I’ll help you.” Snake took his charm from his neck and gave it to Julio. “Wear my charm and you will have all that you desire. And when you have all that you desire you must return my charm to me.”

Julio agreed, and took Snake’s charm and put it on a string around his neck and from that point he became very lucky and everything he wanted came to him. He clothed himself in the drapes of the pachuco, filled his pockets with money, and covered his fingers with gold. It was then, after a season had passed, that snake came back. “You’re living the fantasy, Carnal. Do you have all that you desire so that I can have my charm back?”

Julio had known all along that Snake would try to trick him. His grandmother had told him all the stories of mischievous Snake. “No, Snake. I do not have my true love yet. She is all that I truly desire. Please go Snake, I need your charm for one more season.” Snake reminded Julio of their agreement and left.

Again a season passed, and Snake returned. “Órale! You have clothes, you have gold, you have your ranfla. Do you have all you desire now?”

And again Julio answered. “No, Snake. I do not have my true love yet. She is all that I truly desire. Please go Snake, I need your charm for one more season.” Snake reminded Julio of their agreement and left.

At last autumn came to an end and Snake returned. “Órale, Carnal! You have wealth and friends, more than any one man could possibly want. Do you have all you desire now?”

Again Julio answered. “No, Snake. I do not have my true love yet. She is all that I truly desire. Please go Snake, I need your charm for one more season.” Snake reminded Julio of their agreement and left. Though winter was near and Snake knew he must sleep soon, and without his charm the cold air caused him to grow angry. So Snake slipped into the home of Julio's true love and curled near the fire to keep himself warm between the fire logs. As Julio's true love went out to retrieve wood for the fire, Snake reached out and bit her and his bitterness entered her. So when Julio came at last to court his true love she turned Snake’s bitterness toward him. Again Julio returned to the creek bed and wept. It was then that Snake returned as winter became spring once more. “Órale, chavalo! Why are you crying?”

When Julio told him his story Snake pretended to weep once more. “Now I’ll never get my charm back.” He hissed. “Unless, if you agree to it, I can take my bitterness from her, and she will love you. But I can’t do that, unless you agree to help me to MY heart’s desire.” “Anything.” Was Julio sobbed response.

And so Snake took his bitterness from Julio's true love, who would love Julio forever. Though when spring had ended Snake returned to Julio. “I have done as you desired, Carnal. Now its your turn.” Snake smiled. “You must come with me, and serve me until my heart’s desire is fulfilled.” And so Snake took Julio to the spirit lands, though no one, not even his true love, missed him.

Though Julio could recall this memory every time he was reminded by a particular captive now and again, this instance was only worth mentioning because it would be the last time he would remember it while in service to Snake’s desire.

Snake, who had now adopted the guise of the Gentry Mistress, one of the Fae that ruled over all the captives in this spirit land known as Arcadia, had not really paid too much attention to him after pressing him into service; she had other games to play after all. This really had been just a menial task. His punishment for outwitting Snake. Julio realized that a feeling of resentment had always dwelled on the edge of his memory, and he greatly desired to go home, more than anything else.

So when the indentured captives rose up and killed the mistress, he decided to follow along. After striking their names from the catalogs, and recording them along with those who had long since moved along, he trailed after the escapees. The journey was long, dangerous and hard. When trouble would come he would hide, with the others. The thorns of the underbrush where they hid tore at his flesh, scratching and scaring him deeper than the bone. And as he kept moving, the thorns took out parts of him. Parts that he had forgotten were there to take. The thorns scratched and stabbed until only his desire remained. Julio had no real idea where the group was going; all he knew was that he wanted nothing more than to escape, he knew he had nothing more than his desire. His desire to find his true love, and his desire to be free.
