Overview
Real Name: Jack O'Connell
Entitlement: The Scarecrow Ministry
Physical description:
The Mask - For all intents and purposes, Legion appears to be about 5'10" and fairly thin. His eyes are dark and haunting, and his expression is often described as somber. His skin (should he decide to ever show any) is incredibly pale, bordering on albinism. This only reinforces the general air of uneasiness that tends to surround him.
The Mein - When the Mask drops, the Mein comes forth. The visage that many would see in that circumstance can only be described as terrifying to most. Cloaked in draped, tattered robes the being beneath them is pale to the point of translucence. It has been said that if you look closely enough, you can see his bones beneath the skin and muscles. His face, which many believe can't be his real face, resembles that of a mummy's...leathery and dry as sack cloth with the same unnerving translucence. Usually, however, he covers himself with a large hood...preferring to hide his visage. Until the time is right.

Background:
Jack O'Connell is of Celtic decent, and a practitioner of Celtic Magic and Druidism. This, along with his adulterous relationship with a married woman, would be his downfall.
Jennifer Schaff was a teacher in one of Lincoln's public schools. She and Jack met when he was visiting that school as a Councilor to help the children there deal with a recent string of suicides that had occurred there. They found they had a lot in common, and upon further discussion, it came to light that her husband was rather abusive, both physically and emotionally. They started out innocently enough, with Jack offering an ear to listen with. As time progressed, however, their relationship took a romantic and intimate turn. Eventually, as with most secrets, her husband discovered their indiscretion. He confronted Jack, and threatened bodily harm should he attempt to see Jennifer again. It was then that Jack made his now ill decision.
On All Hallow's Eve in 2006 he decided that he would return Jennifer's Husbands "favor" with one of his own. He began a ritual that, in Jack's mind, would show the husband the true meaning of fear. This, unfortunately for Jack, caught the attention of the Gentry peeking through the Hedge nearby. Upon completion of his ritual, the Gentry felt it was necessary to teach Jack the lesson that was intended for the husband. He was taken to Arcadia to learn.
Jack's Time in Arcadia
They kept him locked in a room. A stone room, similar to the dungeons of old prisons. They "explored" his fears- capitalized upon them. Showed them to him. Tortured him with them. Each and every one. Even the ones that he didn't know he had. And each new fear that presented itself only made it last longer. This went on for seven years, his "conditioning", until one day...he was simply no longer afraid. At least, not of the Others. He was more afraid of himself. Afraid of what he had become...or what he was becoming. His mind began to fracture in order to cope with the constant attack of fear. As each fear presented itself to him, it took on a form of its own. Each form developed a personality in order to deal with the sheer multitude of fears that even he never knew he had. Each aspect being fully aware of the other, Jack eventually lost his sense of individuality and became many as one. On the eighth year of his captivity and solitude, he stood in front of the only adornment in the stone cell...an unbreakable mirror. It was then that he realized that he was no longer Jack O'Connell...no longer an individual. He was Legion...for he was many!
The only thing that kept Legion from loosing himself entirely was a tattered old picture. The image of the one he remembered loving, though he could no longer remember her name. It was this picture, this solitary hold-over from a stolen life that kept him focused on his goal....learn whatever you can and ESCAPE!
Time in Arcadia, as most of the Lost know, takes on a new meaning. No longer linear, Legion forgot the concept of time. He knew he had been there a long time. Centuries to him, though only 8 years had passed by anything resembling a "normal" standard. Eventually, it came to be that his "conditioning" was completed. His Keeper was satisfied that Legion would be a willing (though fearful) servant. He was sold to another Gentry as a slave, though Legion's original Keeper still had a hand in his continuing "education" through fear. But Legion's time in solitude and confinement had taught him a valuable lesson. Let them think they are getting what they want. He played the fearful servant well. And, as with all patient servants...opportunity presents itself.
One evening, seven years after his "indentured servitude" began, his Keeper sent him on an errand. The purpose of the errand is long lost to Legion now. The opportunity, however, was not. All he remembers now is that it took him close to the Hedge. Close enough to finally make his attempt. Using the knowledge he had gained...the Contracts, the contacts, and the fears of those who had kept him (or at least what Legion perceived as their fears)...he manipulated and frightened his way through. And though the Hedge tore at him upon his escape as it did when he was taken, there was no denying the ultimate conclusion...after 15 years in Arcadia (centuries in Legion's mind).....FREEDOM AT LAST!!
The Labyrinth of Legion's mind
The effect of one's time in Arcadia is definitely unique to the individual. Legion is no exception. Having his own fears force-fed to him (so to speak), his mind coped with this in the only way it knew how. With each fear, real or imagined, new or old, that he was forced to deal with..his mind fractured into a personality that took on an aspect of that fear in order to deal with it. In contrast to what would ordinarily be considered classic multiple personality disorder, and equally likely a result of being altered over time in Arcadia, each of the personalities that developed are *keenly* aware of each other. And they don't attempt to "jockey" for first place. Their collective "mission" being to protect the psyche known as Jack O'Connell..although, ironically, Jack's *own* personality became tied up with the rest of them, also working in collective effort.
