Quotes
By Maelstrom
"Shhh. If you but find stillness, you can hear the answer you seek upon the wind."
"Look deeply into the flame, and see the ultimate outcome of such undisciplined fury.”
"The peace you seek can be found in the whispering of the waters, the babbling of the brooks.”
"Feel the impulse of the thunder, sense it call to you. Let go your fears and ride the lightning.”
“Motion itself can be your ally, the purest of elements; force alone. Harness that power for yourself.”
“Draw in the strength of the mountain, the enduring nature of the stone. Let the earth hold you up, and bare away your pain.”
Overheard as wrath overcame his discipline, and Maelstrom transformed into a living cyclone: “Behold now, the folly of your actions, and kneel before the Regent of Storms!!!” The resulting devastation is said to have left behind a desolate waste in the Hedge that took months to overgrow.
About Maelstrom
"The eye of the storm has awakened. Will you weather its fury? Will you seek shelter? Or will you be swept away in the torrent? It is, perhaps, unfortunate that the nature of storms would be to pass on after its climax. We shall see with this one."

Rumors
- Rumor has it that Maelstrom did not so much escape the Gentry, as lose his way and wind up on Earth.
- Some say that the Throne of Fire and Lightning may be a Loyalist or Privateer, as he does not seem to hold much fear of the Gentry.
- The touch of roses causes the Regent of Storms unthinkable pain.
- The Elemental Woodblooded cause stark fear, or perhaps homicidal terror, in the Regent of Storms.
- The Realm of Arcadia and even the Gentry themselves do not seem to have much weight to Maelstrom, but even suggest he set foot in a garden and you may find yourself at the wrong end of a lightning bolt.

Story
The boy who would one day become Maelstrom was born on April 1st, 1930, to a poor family in a province of Kyoto, Japan. An unwelcome addition to a family already struggling in difficult times, the boy was left with the Shao-Lin monks almost as soon as he was weened.
The Usurper
The boy grew strong and capable under the tutelage of the Shao-Lin monks, and demonstrated himself to be an apt pupil and natural disciple of Zen. While not an extraordinary boy in any fantastic sense, he was stolid, dependable and dedicated to his studies and the monks. He devoted himself to learning the principals of Zen and the philosophy of the Shao-Lin, and took to heart all that he was offered.
All was not as idyllic as one might have surmised from the outside, however, as the young boy demonstrated a curiosity and appetite for inquisitiveness that proved alarming to the monks. While he was not, in and of himself, a disruption to the contemplative atmosphere and disciplined training environment of the monastery, his curiosity often took him places and into things that were best left undisturbed.
It was just such a foray of misadventure that would mean the end of the boy's human life, and his introduction to a world of wonders both beautiful and terrible to behold.
It came to pass on a warm spring afternoon, as the young initiate was seeing to his responsibilities in the monastery's garden. He was busily tending to the herbs and vegetables as was his duty, seeing that they were well watered and had ample exposure to the season's temperate sun, when a whisper came from the foliage and startled him. Hardly expecting someone to be concealed within the shrubbery of the large garden, the boy's curiosity was piqued, and he made his way in among the leafy plants and crowded vines in search of the voice.
The whisper seemed to be coming from the depths of the garden, within the old wooden archway that led to the inner stones the monastery had erected for contemplation. But as the youth approached the archway, he could not make out the source of the continued whispers, and was instead startled to see that the sanctum beyond the archway seemed to have been left to overgrow by rambling, thorny hedge. Even the stones that would be used for meditation in the sunny afternoons of the coming summer were invisible through the great growth of stickery brambles, and the boy found himself wondering if the whisper might be coming from someone who had become trapped within the bushes.
Thinking of nothing so much as trying to assist a fellow monk out of such a predicament, the boy slipped through the archway and into the thorny brush in search of the lost monk. But it was not a monk that he found through the archway, nor was it the inner garden which he had expected. Instead, he gazed up into a greenish sky ablaze with sunlight, and could see no walls of stone and mortar that would have delineated the inner garden from the outer.
The boy was about to turn back to the archway, thinking that somehow he must have offended one of the Oni rumored to have resided in the area in the past, but just then he spotted a movement beyond the initial line of thorny growth. A young man of foreign features, with hazel eyes and long black hair tied back, stood in the shadows of the brambles whispering to him. His words were unintelligable to the Shao-Lin boy, but the urgency on the young man's face conveyed a serious need, and so the young man followed intent on assisting however he might.
It was not much longer before the youth realized his mistake, as he found that he could no longer determine the location of the archway or the passage back to it. The thorny growths seemed to poke, scratch and tear at him no matter the grace with which he tried to pass among them. Soon he found that he was having difficulty remembering where it was even that he had come from, or why he desired to return there, as he traveled further and further from the monastery garden.
As he followed the young foreigner away from anything he would ever recognize as home, the man seemed to delight in the journey alone, as though leading him away from the monastery was of some importance or worth. The Shao-Lin boy could not think clearly enough to reason why this would be of such significance, but eventually he found himself gazing across a vast valley towards a distant garden of epic proportions. The landscape was impossible, beautiful and terrible all at once, and the boy could not seem to recall who he was or where he had come from by this point.
The young foreigner took the moment then to address the boy, touching himself on the chest with one hand as he said clearly, "Vestigere." He repeated this action several times, as though it were important that the boy remember his name, and when it was finally repeated back smiled with some smugness or satisfaction and continued away from the thorns and into the valley.
The boy had no alternative but to follow the foreigner, though by this point the man made no pretense of needing help whatsoever, and soon found himself passing into the immense garden he had seen from the distant hillside. He followed as the man approached a colossal being that seemed to be entirely composed of plant material, his Zen training the only thing which kept his senses focused and his mind operating, and he watched as the plant being exchanged something with the foreign man.
The foreigner bowed low then to the being, and then departed without another word, leaving the Shao-Lin boy standing before the demon of nature.
