Background:

Does the butterfly remember what it was like to be a caterpillar? Finally free of its earthly tether soaring freely upon the spring breeze, would it care to remember it’s time sluggishly slithering around the ground? I think not, and for that, I envy the butterfly. Before I was taken to Faerie, my existence was very much akin to the caterpillar; simple, boring, pathetic. Accounting is not the career choice of those seeking to indulge in life. There is no creativity in numbers, only static rules and repetitive rote tasks. I had no family, no friends and spent my boring existence sleepwalking from home to work and back again. Sometimes when I recall the time before my chrysalis, I wonder what my life would be like if I could simply wipe that old existence from my memory. But without remembering the darkness, would the light now be as bright? Are colors as vibrant for those people who have never been without sight? I have lived the darkness, and I will never allow it to happen again.

I was nearly 30 years old when Madame rescued from my early existence, if you could call it that. My first glance of Madame was sitting across from me on the bus one night while heading home from the office. She was stunningly beautiful with fiery red hair and when she smiled at me, I was entranced. She suggested we stop and have a drink, to which I was unable to refuse. From that point, I remember a blur of music, alcohol and my beautiful mystery woman. The next thing I remember was waking in a tangle of silk sheets and flesh with my fiery haired beauty lying on top of me. She was even more beautiful and radiant than I remembered her from earlier in the evening. The remainder of the evening was the most incredible experience of my life.

“Do you think I’m beautiful?” whispered the sultry voice in my ear as I drifted awake. This must be what it’s like to wake up in Heaven I thought to myself as I turned to face my fiery lady.

“I don’t think you could find a more beautiful creature walking the Earth,” I replied, gazing up into her emerald eyes.

Her smile turned into a pouty frown, and the softness in her eyes hardened into a disappointing gaze. “But we’re not on Earth,” she said coldly as she stood up from the bed. “You think there is somebody more beautiful than me.” She must have seen the confused look in my eyes as I tried to comprehend her sudden change. “You are wrong,” she said accusingly before I could even respond. “You need some time to reconsider.” I felt the words stick in my throat, unable to speak. With a wave of her hand, my vision suddenly grew dark as if somebody had shut off the lights. “You are not worthy of me,” was the last thing she said as my world slowly went silent. I tried to feel my way to the edge of the bed and get to my feet but my new blindness and deafness left me very disoriented and I sprawled to the ground clumsily. I felt her hands lift my face from the ground and cradle it. Her breath lingered momentarily on my skin as she placed a quick kiss upon my lips. Then she stepped away, and left me alone in the silent darkness.

It is hard to gauge the passing of time when you suddenly lose access to visual clues like night and day. It took me a while to find my way around my new prison. My room was barren aside from the single bed and a single nightstand. Occasionally, my nose would alert me to food being placed on the table at the side of my bed, though I never could see or hear who delivered it. After several days, my hearing began to return, allowing me some measure of sanity in being able to at least hear my own voice. After what seemed like several more days, my vision slowly started to return. When it did, I found I was only able to see in black & white.

My life in Faerie was primarily spent as a servant and groundskeeper. I knew my captor only as Madame de Fue (Lady of Fire). Though I knew it likely referred to her mane of fiery red hair, it was also appropriate to her equally hot temper. For as long as I remained in Faerie, she never again allowed me to see her face. From that first day onward, I only ever saw her face cast in shadow.

There were other servants in the house like me, but we were rarely allowed to have any contact amongst us. Two large hounds acted as guards to discourage, and sometimes prevent, anybody from thinking of fleeing. On a few occasions when a servant thought to flee, I witnessed the hounds inevitably dragging them back to the house, sometimes in more than one piece. For performing my duties well, I was granted greater access to the house and grounds. Outside, I discovered a world filled with things I had never seen before. The plants were very different, and the smells were not like those back in the real world. I spent much time tending to the grounds, and exploring the natural flora and fauna in this strange place. There were times when Madame grew pleased with me and took me into her bed. The pleasure was fleeting, and was usually followed with a period of time where she would deprive me of my one or several of my senses. To be struck deaf, dumb or blind was my payment for being allowed to enjoy the pleasures of her company.

I don’t know if I’ll ever understand the circumstances of my flight from Faerie. One day, I awoke to a house completely devoid of life. Madame was gone, as were the hounds and the other servants. At first, I thought it a test, but if it wasn’t, how could I stand still and not even try? I found my way though the bizarre forest and did not stray from the path through the overgrown hedge. I thought the path would never end, until suddenly the hedges began the thin, and the color slowly returned to my vision. By the time I emerged into an alley in downtown, I was overwhelmed by the colors I could again see.

Having finally been freed from my captivity, I refused to return to my old life. Though my existence before my time in Faerie was pale in comparison to the darkness I endured at the hands of Madame de Fue, it was not acceptable for me to return. I had allowed too much to pass me by while I sleepwalked through life. Now that my eyes were open, I was not going to close them again. A week or two after my return, I was surprised to meet a large troll as I strolled through the park gazing at the glorious spring flowers. He told me of the Freehold and of the others that had escaped like I had.
