Background

Ignes Montahue Hughes was born just outside of Selma, IN in a barn, in 1922. In 1923 he was found alone, under a large shrub, by neighbors, Mr. & Mrs. Bruner. The Bruners searched the farm and buildings, but no one was found. They left a note with their name and address, and took Ignes home with them. Ingnes grew up on the Bruner farm with his older step-sister Patricia. The farm was a medium sized, at about 5 achres of land, with 6 horses, a dozen hens, a medium sized garden and two small fields. The nearest neighbors were a 1/2 a mile away.

Mr. Bruner worked at the Ball canning factory as a engineer. Mrs. Bruner took care of the farm while Mr. Bruner was away at work. When Mr. Bruner came home, he worked the fields and other hard labor or heaving lifting that needed to be done. By the time Ignes was 5, he was helping feed the chickens and cleaning the house. At age 7 he was expected to clean the barn, work the fields and gather firewood. At age nine his father showed him how to shoe and groom the horses. Ignes and his step-sister Patricia attened school on a regular basis.

Ignes was walking home from school one day by himself, because his sister was sick with small Pox. On his way home it started to snow lightly. He passed by a old barn where he saw some, what appeared to be children playing. Little did he know, it was the same barn he had been born in, and these were no children. As Ignes went to see who these "children" were, he wondered of the road. As he got the barn, the "children" ran out the backdoor. Ignes tried to follow them as the snow started to fall heavier and a storm pick up. Ignes lost sight of the "children" and by now it was snow so hard, that he had lost sight of the barn and the road home.

Ignes tried to find his way back, but with no hope. Ignes did stumble upon a cleared path in the snow, which he thought was road. He followed the road in hopes it would take him to a house or some where he coudld get help. After a while, he noticed a figure following him. He stopped and cried out, "Hello!" As the figure came closer, it was horrifying to Ignes, and he ran aimlessly. Ignes ran for what felt like hours, though frozen patches of thorns and thistles, that torn at his clother and skin like razors. After a while, he emerged on the other side, in a lush, green forest, with the sounds of a waterfall and flowing water. Ignes was no longer cold, but He still was scared by the lashings of the Hedge, exhausted and hungery. He could still hear footsteps behind him and he ran for the river. Ignes came to the bottom of a cliff face, where he saw a huge waterfall and a raging river below him. Ignes jumped into the river and tried to swim to the other side, but the current pulled him towards the water fall and he was pulled under and washed up behind the falls.

After collapsing from pure exhausten, Ignes sleep for several hours. He was awoken by the sound of voices and tools. Ignes was starving by this point, scared out of his wits and just wanted to go home. So he went in the direction of the sounds, in hope to find help. After a while, he came upon a underground mining camp. He started to run toward the camp, when he heard a voice say, "Come this way, boy." Ignes followed the voice, and found himself in a small cavern with a very tall, unusually thin and deathly pale man. Ignes asked him where he was, and the man replied "Eden." Ignes looked puzzled and the man explained about the place in the bible. Ignes asked if he could have something to eat and the man took him to the camp and fed him. After eating, Ignes asked if the man knew how to get him home. The man told him that there was no way home and that he would have to stay here. Ignes didn't believe him and took off running, but the man was much faster and strong then Ignes.

Ignes was put to work in the mines of Arcadia for the next ten years. One day, a short, portely fellow, with deep mahagony skin, long, nimble, boney fingers and a brillant hammer was inspecting the mines. He was also looking at the others working in the mine, giving a yea, or ney. When he came upon Ignes, he was impressed with his strength and gave him a yea. Ignes and others were taken from the mine to a large mountain. Inside there were all sorts of machines, parts, tools and creature scampering about. They were instructed that they were to be runners for the smithies and crafters, of Lord Glitterold's domain. For the next eleven years Ignes worked as he was told, watching and learning as he went. Occasionally he would take some time to try out what he had saw. One day he accidently left one of his creations out and it was found by one of the crafters. It was given to Glitterold, who asked to meet the Slave. Glitterold asked him what his name was, and he replied "Ignes Montahue Bruner." Glitterold asked, "Did you make this?" Ignes replied, "Yes." Glitterold said, "Not bad for not having a forge or proper tools, how did you do it?" Ignes replied, "I sat it next to the fire and then used a rock to shape it. "Ingenious," Glitterold replied. "I knew I didn't make a mistake when I chose you. You shall be sent to the forges in the North Quarter to learn the true trade."

Ignes was taken to the North Quarter, where he passed through a huge cavern full of armour and weapons, but on caught his eye. A magnificent piece of armor clad in samite and a briliant gleaming sword. Ignes was taken to a smaller area where there were others learning the trade. Ignes excelled quickly, and with in three years he was a Junior craftsman.

At the next tournament, Glitterold chose Ignes to represent his Junior Craftsman in the competions. Ignes wond all twenty-five of his matches and was name all-around champion of the the Junior Craftsman. After many years of countless competions,he wa promoted to Master Craftsman and Glitterold's personal smith. He was the Master Craftsman of all his keeper's smihties and was boasted by Glitterold to the Others, as the finest smithie in all Arcadia. This often brough fierce rivalry from neighboring smithies and often intense battles to see who could last the longest, when given tasks after tasks. During one of the battles with Valentine, he caught his index finger on the side of an anvil and smashed it clean off, but he was so prideful, that he seered it and finished the competition. Glitterold commisioned to have a replacement finger fashioned for Ignes, but the finger was useless. In time Glitterold stopped boasting over Ignes and found a new favorite.

Upon escaping Arcadia, Metalfinger made his pledge with the Autumn season shortly after his return to the mudane world. Autumn reminds him of his family, constantly, and helps his crops grow. He would never wish his ordeal on anyone, but every time he feels fear, it is like a surge of adrineline. One day while in New York for a renesonce fair, Metalfinger met Alexandrer Delapore. After talk for a while, Alexander offered to teach Metalfinger about the Autumn Court. Metalfinger studied for the next five years with Alexander.

Metalfinger doesn't blend in with the mundane world very well. He often works at renesonce fairs and SCA events and as a free-lance blacksmith. He sees himself as resilent, clever and dedicated, but hates his blue skin, short presence and social aloofness. He is also one of the most skilled blacksmithers, while be focused on tasks and inspired by the armour and weapons of the middle ages. Metalfinger is also narrow-minded, weak-willed and fameless.

Quotes

  • "The fire burns but the thorns kill."
  • "You there, you are ugly! And you're too skinny! Eat Some Food!- Kingsley when he first met Metalfinger
  • "The flesh is transitory. Keats talked about a 'Vale of Soulmaking'. Perhaps that vale is a furnace. A place where souls are melted, tested, and proven by the old alchemies. If so, than Ignes Hughes will come out pure. If he is not the alchemist, himself. Metalfinger understands the fire." - Alexander Delapore
  • "Beware the servant of Thor is hunting the spring court."
