Background:

Against his will?? As a child Nicadeamus showed signs of some degree of autism. While he excelled in the arts, music, and reading, he lacked most basic social skills often leaving him detached, unemotional, and not speaking more than needed. He often drifted into a world of imagination and often understanding what most people would not comprehend in their wildest dreams. He was introduced to a variety of things that stretched his imagination. He used blocks and various connector pieces to create new worlds that set the stages of his fantasies and dreams. He would lose himself in books living the lives of the people he read about, adventuring almost side by side with the protagonists’. Games and especially puzzles, would also peak his interests, losing himself in it perplexities. His connection to the mysterious and unknown was almost freighting, for every challenge encountered seemed to unfold like a path before him. Over time, with every new accomplishment, the closer he felt that something was not right. Ordinary, everyday things in the world now felt more familiar more logical. He began to see patterns with everyone and everything. It was not very long after until he came to terms that world was not right… It was too neat… too orderly. It was in that moment the world seemed to fade away. For what felt like eternity he had no thoughts and all he saw was another’s face grinning. It was darkness that was beaming before him, taking shape of a thin angular silhouette. It danced and twirled about him gleefully it beckoned Nicadeamus to play again. While the ability of choice was hallow, deep down curiosity was much more convincing. He went along with the dark creature to spend an eternity in amusement. His jailor was not cruel in any physical or emotional sense, but was methodical to one’s mind which could be torture to any imagination or ideal. Every game, puzzle, book and adventure held an underlining purpose to it and a consequence. Occasionally he would see others like him playing as well but Nicadeamus would never lose to them. Afterwards he never would see those others again, but in the back of his head he knew their fate. Even throughout the mind racking trials, he still had time to ponder his captivity. Why me? Is this is all just one big game? What is the pinnacle point of it all? Is all centered around purpose? For every little joy that had come to pass, we both had been seeking a single purpose from one another. The game now turned into a race, both seeking the true question from one another. It was the most difficult riddle he had ever come across. It was not until he was wondering a labyrinth, another cunning and dangerous creation from his captor, pondering his purpose here when the answer was at the tip of his tongue.

“…But in night, the darkness breathes, if he wills it be. Before his eyes, the music dies, but he will always hear me. He sits alone, the cards are shown, as he embraces the dark. The only sound, that he will hear, is there in his…” -O’Neill, Oliva, Caffery

It was then when rounding a corner to another endless passage when he discovered something odd and out of place even for this game. It was an ornate oak door with intricate gold cravings around the frame, in a tongue unknown to him. It had a simple, unpolished and dusty, silver handle that showed signs that it had not been used for quite some time. He was timid to see what lied behind it because of its eerie and auspicious nature, but curiosity and intrigue turned the handle and pushed opened the door.

The Great Escape?? Stepping through Nicadeamus found himself in yet again new surroundings. It was immediately apparent that he was not in the game anymore because of the new feelings that overwhelmed him here. This new world was chaotic and unfettered of any laws and logic. It was a strange and dark place full of odd looking sights. The ambiance of this new place overwhelmed him with the feelings of nostalgia. Oddly he felt distant and insignificant again, but this is were he felt comfortable once more. He felt at home, it was a whole new world to explore and understand. It is wild and untamed which made him more excited than he had ever been, being in this candy land of knowledge and intrigue. He had almost forgotten everything of his previous life, as if it was a hazy dream, as he set off to wander in this new realm. He discovered a new meaning in his life, to explore and categorize all he would see this new territory. And maybe through his exploration he may unearth a reason to it all.

Draw or Fold While studying the blood suckle plant he was “rescued” by a band of changelings from the House of Cards Freehold, not that he needed to be saved. Against his will yet again he was shown another world, the world of mundane. Toi Breaker, a changeling of the House of Cards Freehold, was kind enough to take him under her wing, even though she did not feel she was the right person. For Nicadeamus the fates could have not chosen a better person. She gave him job and allowed him to stay at her hotel the 52-pickup. It was a strange relationship, she being a dominatrix and him being a book worm, but it worked. She cleaned him up and gave him his first mundane clothes in longest while, an expensive and comfortable bathrobe. It seems like now no matter where he goes now, he wears nothing but the soft robe everywhere. Since his founding in the hedge, it seems as though he has not left the comforts of this lavish hotel, mostly being shacked in his room. But in actuality he sneaks into the hedge often undetected to continue his exploration and to satisfy his hunger for curiosity. He converted his room into an entire library of his hand made collections of his travels and with other “lost” collections. Over the few months spent with them he has gotten comfortable with the changelings around him and interested in the external and internal turmoil of each individual. Within the freehold he has also found purpose, great utility, and whether they want it or not he has found that they are in dire need of him. It could have been from the years of twisting and being warped from Arcadia and the hedge but, Nickadeamus did not really have sense of magnitude of grander scheme of what was going on. It was not until the night Commander Biggs, a revered changeling of the freehold was snatched by Gentry in the middle of gathering and dragged back to Arcadia possibly Lost forever, did he realize the great tragedy of the chaotic and mysterious world he loved. That day he gained another purpose in life and he would use his determination of not letting anything get in his way to do what must be done.

Quotes

  • "Remember the new guy fresh from the Hedge I told you about? The one I told that he was in a crappy, robot-slaveless future and that I was a giant homo? Well, Nic was the other one. I'm going to level with you, he really creeps me out...and not just 'cause he looks giant man-shaped sushi. I mean, we're all different, but he's...alien." - Dzxoxian Brokehorn
  • "Oh, trust me...that bathrobe is the only thing he fucking wears. I looked up and saw him coming down the stairs..." <shudder> "The tentacles aren't just on his face. Oh, God...I'm gonna be sick." - Dzxoxian Brokehorn
  • "Man did I do a terrible job of introducing him to the real world. I can barely even get him to put clothes on! He only wants to wear a bathrobe. But it's cool. He doesn't lie, he always keeps his word, and he always pays his debts. It's a hell of a lot more than I can say for some of the other members of this Freehold!" - Toi Breaker
  • "Don't ask for the surprise. Trust me. YOU DO NOT WANT THE SURPRISE!" - Tobias "Falcon" Scott
  • Upon learning more about The Highwayman and his fascination with her: "Oh Nicky... What have you done to me?" - Toi
