- The Black Tortoise, i.e., Xuan Wu (China), Genbu (Japan), Hyeon-mu (Korea)
- Stupa (Buddhist mound or storehouse said to initially store the Buddha's ashes)
- pieces of old Chinese or Japanese armor (commonly old Shang Dynasty formed of turtle shells bound with cords)

Beliefs:
- "Suffering is good. It is constant."
- Denying one's demons gives one their power.
- Attachment should be eschewed.
- North courtiers are often ascetics.
Earmarks/Observations from outside the Court:
- Denying one's demons apparently pisses them off, because North courtiers are frequently bruised and scarred.
- North courtiers are apparently not just "not living", but might actually be dead. They often smell of dust and ashes.
- North courtiers are tougher than they look.
