Background:
A pedestal. She liked to keep me on a pedestal. A statue, a vase, and then me. Sometimes She liked to make me into an ice sculpture, a fragile little piece that would melt away with one fiery hot breath. She did not do that often...melt me, I mean. She only did that when I angered Her, and I learned the first time that I never wanted to do that again.
My brother, I know I had a brother. When I think of him I remember sunshine, and warmth, and things that grow instead of die. Everything here dies, eventually.
Once She brought a boy my age, a teenager, here. He looked so scared at first. She hung him by his neck over the entrance to Her home like a good luck charm. Slowly, a little bit every day, he aged. By the end of it he just looked empty inside, dangling over the threshold, dried up like an herb. I realized that the other icicles around the door had to be people like him, the ones that weren't pretty enough to be on display.
My hair was brown, like my dad's hair. Deep dark brown, almost black underneath it. It was. I don't remember what color my dad's eyes are. My mom's are blue, though, like the deep blue ice that makes up the floor here. Like my eyes. That's why She chose me, because I had sapphire eyes. She is going to make the rest of me match my eyes. My skin started to turn blue the day I arrived here. The cold settled into my fingers, my arms, all of me, and I'm not sure I'll ever be warm again.
When I think of my brother I remember being warm, once. And safe, where I could sleep without being afraid.
Someone new was brought in, but I did not speak with him. He looked at me and seemed to be surprised. I saw my distorted reflection in the polished ice as I followed Her down the hall. I am used to it, now, the delicate hint of blue on my skin, instead of a healthy pink. And my hair, blue to match my eyes. But I suppose to one unused to such changes I appeared as monstrous as She does. Her giant scaled form, at first it terrified me. Now, I see the beauty in Her, the jewels that cover Her shine like starlight, a glow that goes from deep midnight blue like the depths of the ocean to a delicate silver that gleams with a clear shimmer and pure white, the color of the first snowflake of the Winter. Every part of Her is flawless.
I have many flaws. She took my hand from me, to punish me. I deserved it, for making Her angry. I thought I saw my brother, and I ran toward him, crying out his name. I fell, jerked back by the glowing cerulean cord that bound my neck. She did not pause as She walked toward me, Her humanoid form towering over me as I lay fallen on the ground. I wept as I watched him walk away, I do not know if it even was him, but he did not look back, and was gone. The tears froze on my face as She stepped closer, a slight frown on Her otherwise perfect face. Around me frost appeared on the grass, and as I looked up at Her the winds whipped stinging snow and sleet against my bare arms and legs. She reached down and calmly grasped my left wrist. I screamed in pain, it felt as though my bones were turning to ice. I choked as my muscles froze as well, ice forming from the inside out. Then, casually, She snapped my hand from my arm, shearing it cleanly away, leaving only the stump of my wrist. She jerked the cord binding me to Her, and I felt the cold recede slightly, just enough that I could rise, stumbling like a sleepwalker after Her as She finished Her errands. She idly tossed my hand to a small imp, his flame-covered form and apelike mannerisms seeming all the world like a devil from a story of hell. He grasped it, and it vanished in a quick burst of steam, gone forever as he cackled madly.

Quotes
Quotes by Nyx
- "What do I want more than anything in the world? Why would I tell you that. Perhaps it is simply to be left alone."
- "You may threaten me. You can scream, and you can yell. You can call me names, and insult me until you have no breath left in you. But if you ever, ever take any action to harm my brother, I will move heaven and hell to see that your actions come back upon you threefold. Weigh your choices carefully, for you do not wish to make an enemy of me, much less of Aether." - Nyx to an unnamed man, concerning threats against her brother, Aether.
Quotes about Nyx
- Fishes a small ice cube from his glass. "When one looks at ice," he raises it into the light, "They often forget, it is a force of nature unto itself. That ice has reshaped the world just as much as the other more traditional elements, even today it still works mercilessly to do what it has always done." Pause. "What does this have to do with Nyx?" Pops the ice cube into his mouth and in a swift bite, breaks the ice and swallows the smaller pieces. "Figure it out for yourself." ~ Nathaniel Fellows
