Obediah Yule, as the proprietor of Obediah Yule's Rare Book Emporium is a collector (and puveyor) of rare books. He collects books on varied topics, from the occult to the mundane. He is also reluctant to part with the books, often asking overly exorbitant prices, or bartering for items that the asker will be unlikely to wish to part with.

He also collects information. Gossip and rumours interest him, but verifiable and factual information will almost always draw his attention. In some cases, he has waived payment for a book in return for a particularly juicy piece of information. Or at least...that's what people say.

Chances are, Yule does not like you. One might be hard pressed to name someone that Yule does like. His a miserable, heartless old dog, and revels in his own bitterness.

Known History

Basic Timeline:

Current Activities: The sole proprietor of Obediah Yule's Rare Book Emporium, and its only employee.

Background: Taken at the age of 25, Obediah spent what seemed like years in service to his Keeper, tending the library which was filled with many fantastical books. His keeper did not care to read the books, but considered owning them a prestigious thing. When Obediah made his escape after his years of captivity, he returned to the world to find that he had only spent a few short hours away, but now found himself a much older man. That was in 1995. He soon took the skills he had honed in his Keeper's service to opening his own book shop.

Allies

Mister Wednesday - Like Obediah, Wednesday is a Miserable C*nt. By virtue of their shared motley, they can be considered allies. They also play a regular game of chess, in which each tries to out cheat the other. At last count, the score was tied.

Enemies

Kesper Cricketbane - Obediah and Kesper are polar opposites. It was inevitable that they would be at odds with each other. Kesper is a do-gooder, a busy body, and just generally too liberal. Kesper's leftist leanings are at odds with Obediah's miserly tendencies. However, for Obediah, the trouble really started when Kesper came into the Rare Book Emporium, and had the temerity to ask to purchase a book on the French Revolution. Obediah refused, on the grounds that Kesper's attention span was far to short, and he would never actually read the book. However, Kesper has an "Information wants to be Free" attitude, and believes himself slighted by Yule's refusal

Quotes

"This book has been sought by many, from rich to poor, innocent to decadent, scholar to adventurer. The question you should ask yourself is...of all those who have sought it, why are you the one worthy enough to have it? What can you offer?"

"What just happened?! I don't even know why I'm here!" --upon causing a maiden to smile during the Ritual of Victory, clinching the win for the men of the freehold.

Rumors

  • It is said that Obediah Yule has no intention of actually selling the books at his emporium. That he spent so much time and effort obtaining them, why would he just give them away to anyone with money? So far, this appears to be the truth.
  • Rumours of child labour and the possession of slaves often swirls around Yule. Are any of them actually true?
  • Yule apparently doesn't eat. Reports say that he subsides entirely on the tears of orphans.
