Background: Paul’s family wasn’t a long line of anything. They had been laborers and intellectuals, businessmen and itinerants. The only real tradition was going to war, every time America had gone to war for over a century the Swans had signed on the line and gone off to fight for their country. Paul’s war was a bit different. He was in college, a budding intellectual and by all accounts a very bright young man and while he wasn’t politically active he still had his issues with the impending war in Vietnam. His father hadn’t come back from Korea entirely intact and neither had his uncles who had fought in the Pacific in the big one and Paul didn’t exactly like the idea of the whole thing. But when things started heating up Paul did what his ancestors had done in times of war, he had gone to the big recruiting office in the city and signed away his life for the duration.
Paul’s first days in country weren’t too bad. He wasn’t getting shelled or shot at like his father in Korea and he didn’t have to swim to the shore like his uncle at Iwo Jima. He had his books and his orders and settled into the routine pretty well. He didn’t make friends easily and he didn’t fit in well, just like back at school. But the Heads didn’t mind if he curled himself up in their corner on cold nights and the gung ho types liked the idea of having someone who could read the maps and help out with the more fiddly bits of soldiering.
Then the war got really hot and he got his first taste of combat. He made it through the first time, and the second and even a few after that that most of his comrades didn’t. He still didn’t mind not having anyone who he could call a friend because he still had his books and his orders and now he had his war, and to his surprise, he liked it. When his first tour was at an end he signed up for another, right away. He kept surviving, being small and being able to find a convenient hole to crawl into kept him alive. He even managed to earn a pair of stripes which he was proud of; even it was mainly because they had started to run out of old hands. As his unit pushed into the jungle and villages Paul found a job he really liked. Being a tunnel rat fit him well; crawling into those cool, quiet tunnels was much more comfortable than crouching on the damp ground in the hot jungle waiting for a firefight.
Paul’s third tour was a bit different. He was given a promotion and a third stripe, but his unit was being rotated back to the world and Paul insisted on staying. He was transferred by MACV brass to act as an adviser to newly arrived American units to help them cope with the war in the jungle. He became indefinitely attached to a Company from 3/3 168th Air Mobile. In the beginning things were much the same as they had been with his old unit but as the weeks and the war wore on Paul found himself opening up and finding, if not friends than kindred spirits, and his position brought out other abilities as well.
When things went FUBAR Paul never cracked or lost it like so many others did, but then there wasn’t much to lose that he hadn’t already and wisps of smoke can’t break.

Allies
- Race - Damn fine leader of men, wouldn't mind him giving the service when they put me six feet under.
- Ox - Big? Definately. Dumb? Probably, although I wouldn't say it to his face. Best guy to have with you in a brawl? Fuck yea!
- Rook - "Spooky", description, ocupation or a gooney bird joke? Bit of all three really.
- Doc Shepherd - I have all the respect in the world for conchies, really, I do. I have more for the ones who are willing to actually serve in combat. And even more for the ones who have saved my ass when I needed it.

- KJ Walters - Fuck they're making them young these days! Still needs his breaking in though.
Enemies
- The Twilight King - He can be the king of dawn, dusk and everything in between for all I care. I just want to meet him in a dark alleyway at midnight, and some night, I will...
