Known History
What it was to be needed
- In Victorian times England was more of a nation of domestic servants than shopkeepers.
The middle classes employed as many servants as possible to demonstrate their newfound wealth and status. The lower classes or poorer families sacrificed living standards just to employ one. In 1888 butlers earned £45 per annum and had no expenses except clothes. They would make up their income from such perks as tradesman offering discounts to receive continued orders. Butlers would also collect the end of candles and one bottle of wine for every six opened.
In Victorian times the butler was responsible for the footman, custody of the plate and the control of the cellar. He would brew the servants' beer, arrange the dinner table, announce dinner and carve the joints in fashionable homes where dinner was served from side tables. When a footman had finished his lengthy apprenticeship he might aspire to join the upper servants by applying for a post of Valet or Butler. It then became commonplace for these two positions to be combined except in the richest households. In modern times butlers receive excellent salaries for the dedication and commitment required to succeed in this fascinating profession. A butler has to ensuring that "sir or madam's" every household need is met, often before it is requested. Their skills need to cover such tasks as cooking, valeting, driving, gardening and knowing a form of self defence. A well trained butler will bring social skills and etiquette to a household as well as an ability to take over and run an entire home. A good relationship between a butler and his employer is also essential; neither too familiar nor too distant, in order to achieve the mutual respect and trust needed for a successful placement. If the mix is right it is often a job for life.
Basic Timeline:
Background: During the late 1930s there were few options open to young men of a certain status. Fewer still to those who were raised to believe that they had but one path to follow, that of the family tradition. Rodger Saltpan was such a young man. Fortunately for Rodger, his family's tradition was one which allowed him to be fairly well educated in several fascinating subjects and aligned with the households of some of London's most distinct and influential residence. That of Butlery.
Some may consider the art of butlery a lowly profession, mere servitude. However, Rodger and his family regarded it in an entirely different manner. The Saltpans were a long line of butlers and personal valets, each knowing full well the responsibility and personal fulfillment that is associated with the profession and taking great pride in the work. By the age of 14 Roger was already a footman and well on his way. He worked for the Favershums and enjoyed every moment in that house. At 16 he began to day dream about a beautiful stable hand named Garrett, this was to be the first, last and only crush he would allow himself to endure. As it happened Roger was tiding up in the dry goods storage when he saw what would crush him and make him swear off flesh. he found Garrett and the new maid, Alice in the throws of passion. Hurt and embarrassed he informed the butler and the head maid, Garrett and Alice were relieved of their positions and set out on the street.
At 18 the family that Roger had worked for 10 years fell on a run of bad luck and had to leave the house and let the staff go, Crushed and confused Roger returned home to his father who was in the employment of a court Barron Named DeMerchant, Seeing that his son was down Rogers father offered to help him find a new position. The Court Barron that Rogers father worked for had many contacts in many fields. Within a week Roger was moving into the home of the Malkins to take his fist position as a butler. Full of pride Roger performed his duties with speed and accuracy. Impressed buy there new butler and his skill the Malkins employed a tutor for young roger to learn the things that he would need to know to perform his duties outside of the home. The tutor was a small frail man named Mr. McFagin. For the next year Roger spent every moment he could spare wile not doing his normal duties ravenously learning etiquette, social graces, politics and other academics. Mr. McFagin was very impressed by Rogers thirst and amassing by his ability to remember every detail, all wile performing his normal days work and even forgoing sleep to ingest more and more knowledge.
It was a week before his 20th birthday when a group of loyalists led by a true Fae came for the man that Roger had come to call friend. Roger was instantly filled with Awe as the Fae walked toward McFagin, his eyes filled with fear and his voice cracking under the stress of what was to come next. As the strange men hoisted McFagin up into the carriage Roger looked on with horror as McFagin begged for his life and for the life of Roger. The Fae not taking notis of Roger decided to take him as well. the Next 20 years of rogers life were spent under the yoke of a relentless Fae obsessed with etiquette, Roger would lose the ability to breath every time he made what the Fae considered to be a faux pas. After some time Roger stopped thinking about that. The day that McFagin died, a little part of Roger seemed to die as well, McFagins body was discarded like trash there was nothing Roger could do wile the Beasts fed on his friends flesh. To this day Roger has never eaten meat because of this. The Fae took Grate joy in filling Rogers dreams of this For the rest of his time in the hedge. Roger began a new obsession in dreams learning to master then, shape them and ultimately control them to the point when the Fae's trick no longer burdened Rogers sleep.
The revolt came with no warning and was over before Roger had realised it had started. He was jerked out of bed like a sack of produce and dragged out of the Fae home by a band of servants led by a giant of a man named Martin. When the dust settled only a hand full of changelings made it out of the hedge and there leader lay dieing on the ground with Roger holding him Martin asked that Roger help the survivors get to a freehold and to safety. Roger did what he was asked. Roger traveled the new world only a short time when he came to Phoenix, to find the city is a state of unrest and disorder. He had arrived only a few months before the Fae came for Anerian Gynholm. When the dust settled Roger was again in the company of a small group of changelings that needed help to rebuild there city and there lives.
Roger was instrumental in the forming of the new freeholds and helped to maintain the lines of communication between the distant and untrusting courts. It is believed that the reason all the courts seemed to trust Roger was that he himself was not part of any court and therefore was impartial and truthful during the mediation of the courts and the forming of the new freeholds. Now Roger has taken a back seat to the people who are more fit to lead and now acts only and a mediator and counsel of the courts to help when there are disputes or when large gatherings are needed.
