Background:
Deryn Jones was a small-time folk-pop singer in her native Wales, having just signed a contract with Green Linnet Records, a Celtic traditional record company (c. 1992), when her angelic singing voice and her expansive knowledge of traditional fae-related songs caught the attention of an indolent Fae courtier. The courtier followed Deryn for months, attending concerts and performances, acquiring her self-produced EP, and insinuating herself into Deryn's life to the point of a few casual dates. Sleeping with the fae seemed to release some unknown ban against her abduction, and the fae soon made her true self known. Stealing her away, she transformed Deryn into a nightingale and chained her to a golden perch in her sitting room with barbed leather jesses. Deryn was forced to sing for guests, or sit silently while Fae politics were conducted in front of her. Despite not being a carnivore or carrion-eater, she would be force-fed pieces of lesser courtiers whom her mistress murdered, as her mistress believed the bloody diet brought "depth" to Deryn's voice.
One night a fellow servant loosed the jesses and Deryn fled for her life; when she emerged from the thorns what felt like weeks later, she was found by another passing Changeling who helped guide her into her new life. Doing research, she discovered that she was officially dead, having overdosed on heroin after her album tanked.
Rossignol is extremely skittish about interpersonal relationships, though she is not without her charms. She passes easily through Changeling society, making few waves but gathering a *lot* of information. She considers herself to be a freelance message-carrier and political advisor, and generally only works for favors.

Chorus
"I cannot live in the palace, and build my nest; but let me come when I like. I will sit on a bough outside your window, in the evening, and sing to you, so that you may be happy, and have thoughts full of joy. I will sing to you of those who are happy, and those who suffer; of the good and the evil, who are hidden around you. The little singing bird flies far from you and your court to the home of the fisherman and the peasant's cot. I love your heart better than your crown; and yet something holy lingers round that also. I will come, I will sing to you; but you must promise me one thing."
"Everything," said the emperor, who, having dressed himself in his imperial robes, stood with the hand that held the heavy golden sword pressed to his heart.
"I only ask one thing," she replied; "let no one know that you have a little bird who tells you everything. It will be best to conceal it." So saying, the nightingale flew away.

- She once had a torrid affair with Mr. Hudson
- She once had a disastrous affair with an unnamed Summer Queen
- She's never once had an affair with anyone and is clinically frigid
