Mask: Scarlet appears to be a reasonably attractive twenty-something; tall, with dark hair and eyes. But what really sets him apart is his rich, resonant singer’s voice.

Mien: Scarlet’s mien doesn’t change his appearance much. His hair and eyes become darker still, to a light-drinking black which is unnatural. His features even out to an inhumanely perfect symmetry. And his voice has an echo within it that can be heard even in a crowded room.

Background:

Once upon a time there was a boy who could sing so sweetly that people said he sang like a songbird, with a voice so pure that it was like an angel. His parents sent him to a special school for musicians where he did very well.

One year there was to be a solo at the school’s Christmas Concert and the boy knew that he should be the one picked to sing it. But he wasn’t. His best friend got it instead. The boy ran off in a sulk and ended up in McDonald’s, crying.

While he was there a beautiful woman asked him what was wrong. He told her how he had been denied the solo so unfairly. She asked him if he would be willing to sing for her if she arranged for him to sing at the concert. Of course the boy agreed.

The concert grew nearer and nearer but nothing happened. The boy began to think more and more that this was a cruel joke, but practised anyway just in case. On the night of the concert he was running late, since he wasn’t going to sing the solo, and was last there. What a palaver! The soloist hadn’t turned up and nobody could get in touch and there was nobody else who could do it! Catastrophe! And the boy piped up that he could sing the treble solo, he’d been practising. After a quick moment of checking the choirmaster said that yes, he’d do and the concert could happen.

It was magnificent! The best that the boy had ever sung in his life. The cathedral echoed with his sweet and pure voice and everyone was stunned. This was, they said, the best they had ever heard. He got a standing ovation.

When the concert was over everyone was so happy and congratulating the boy until a policeman came in from the street. Apparently the car bringing the real soloist had been involved in an accident. And that was when the beautiful lady showed up again. It’s time to come with me, she said. You got to sing here, so now you must sing for me.

Where am i? It’s like a palace somewhere. i remember, i have to sing for Her and Her guests. Everyone listens and i can make them and the world do things just by singing. She’s so good to me, when i sing well, but i can’t be perfect every time. It hurts when She’s angry with me , but i almost don’t mind because of the wonderful things i can do and the magnificent parties the rest of the time.

My voice, what’s happened!? i can’t sing! No please, don’t send me away! i’ll try harder, you can hurt me if you want. Don’t give me to the dragon-lady. Why’s it so dark? Where’s my dragon-lady? She hurts me and cares for me all at the same time but she’s left me now. i’m confused, come back.

i can sing again! My voice is back, it’s different but it’s mine. The prison opens before me and the guards just stand and watch in awe as i leave. Home, where’s home? Sing, i can sing my solo and follow it back to where i came from. There! The doors of the cathedral, i can see them hidden in the thorns. I’m free!
