The Boogie Man(Description)

Mask:A bald man in his late twenties, possibly early thirties with blue eyes and a small goatee. If not confined within Riner's Home of Psychiatric Health, he manages to wear a black suit complementing his eyes by choosing a shirt of dark blue.

Mien:His Mein is best described as the dark elf of gamer fantasy. Jet black skin, long white hair and fierce red eyes. He wears black combat fatigues topped with a black infantry helmet and a gas mask. Though, interestingly enough, his red eyes glow green once the mask is on.

Urban Legends(History)

Why do we watch Horror films? Because we enjoy being scared, that’s why. The old movies with Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff are hailed as classic “scary” movies. They’re really not scary. They’re safe. Deep down in your brain, you know that they are safe. Mummies, giant dinosaurs and creatures from black lagoons simply do not exist.

They say that the Boogie Man is not real either.

However, I look at myself and I know that I am real.

Terror, on the other hand… Not many enjoy terrifying movies. There is no safety switch. What happens in those movies- Last House on the Left, Hostel, He Knows You’re Alone –those terrible things could quite literally happen to anyone. And it’s because of that, not many enjoy those movies. No one, really, likes being reminded that there are terrible things waiting to happen to them.

I remember writing the stories for the little ones. Little ditties and rhymes made to scare them. Morality plays to get the children to be good little boys and girls. Don’t go into the woods alone or else the wolf will eat you. Do not disobey your parents or else the Uggy Wump will get you. Be good little children or else the Boogie Man will kill you.

Perhaps that is what made them take me. The stories… Society nods it’s approval to every conceivable horror that is wrought upon ourselves. They wanted me to create monsters for them. And create monsters is exactly what I did. In the dark, I would dream. And from my dreams, reality sprang forth and would find it’s way into the hearts and imaginations of the muses of the world.

Every Slasher, every beast, every terrible act on celluloid was once my dream. It should go without saying that my wildest dreams are the world’s worst nightmares. Soon, in the darkness, I had stopped dreaming. And after that, I began to be one of my dreams- a walking nightmare. I was a butcher that would prey upon others in the darkness. It was their pain and blood that allowed me to keep from fading away into nothingness.

Finally, I managed to break through a window in my Hell. And I found myself in a world torn by war. Crawling through a desolate night of trenches filled with mustard gas and the scorched earth of no-man’s land. They found me, however, and they brought me back into the darkness. Again, to be a butcher, though, this time, the pungent odor of horseradish followed me. Bathing myself in every sort of liquid and fragrance, I could never get the scent of those trenches off of my skin.

Once more, I escaped. It was during that night in which I found people who would listen to me. They found me on the side of the road wearing only a hospital smock and carrying a fireman’s axe. It was not far from me that they found the couple who pulled over to help me. He was in the woods. She was in the car- and on the road, and in the ditch, and in the woods.

Was there even a simulacrum of me? I imagine that there was a long time ago. A figure made of ice, the same way that goblins would steal children and leave a child that had been sculpted from ice in their place. It was probably forgotten about or somehow melted.

I was placed in chains, which I escaped… I was made to stand before others and explain myself. I tried to tell them the truth. I was placed into a padded room, my arms bound against myself. After getting out of that white jacket, they began giving up on putting it on me. And then, I would get out of my room.

Being described as a schizophrenic, they began to allow me to educate myself as a form of therapy. For those of you keeping score, this is my transition into more modern English in which many more are able to comprehend. I feel that this form of therapy is ultimately their undoing.

They allow me to write. They publish me even, under a pseudonym, of course. After all, what self respecting parent would buy their children story books that were written by a homicidal maniac? Do not answer that question. Though, I will submit this- Little Johnny love their Grand Theft Auto on PS2 and The Hills Have Eyes on Saturday matinee.

Why have they not realized that I get out of my room at night? Why have they not learned that it is I doing these things? Why do they whisper about what I do until it becomes legend?

Legend is what makes me immortal. Their nightmares make me immortal. They can kiss their children on the cheek and tell them that the Boogie Man is not real. But as they kiss their children goodnight, they dare not mention to them what happened to Heather Knight, who lived two houses down. Heather who was out smoking pot with her boyfriend instead of studying for her Algebra mid-term. Heather and her boy friend, both hacked to pieces with an axe their corpses heavy with the lingering scent of mustard gas. No need to frighten their young ones, after all. Though, perhaps, frightening them would keep them safe.

The Ministry came to me eventually. They are others like me, though in most cases, not as extreme. See, our purpose is two scare the children of the world. We keep them from misbehaving or going into cemeteries after dark. I do have to break some eggs to make an omelet, so I do manage to carve up unsuspecting teenagers about every two years or so- to set an example. In today’s day and age, there must be a gory example to serve as a reminder as to why people should be scared. There are true monsters in the world. Whether they drink blood to sustain themselves in undeath or diddle little girls; scaring the children keeps them from potentially entering situations in which they may encounter these monsters.

As a side note in my closing, I could make a killing, for lack of better words on the internet. Everyone has heard tales of young ladies being seduced by a mysterious stranger online, agreeing to meet him and then never being heard from again. I believe the vernacular is “keeping it real”. However, whether I am in a chat room or in the woods off of a secluded mountain road, I am the Boogie Man, an urban legend, a nightmare, a morality play, a chilling reminder…

Don’t go into the woods at night.

Don’t have sex out of wedlock.

Be good little boys and girls.

… or else the Boogie Man will get you.

Ghost Stories(Inspirations)

Talk about a character that wrote itself... I was thinking of what to do for Changeling and I had seen a board game at one of the local gaming stores- some sort of Lovecraft in WWII theme. One character that players have the option of was this... Sonderkommando". A German soldier wearing a gas mask and toting a smg. But what made him creepy was the glowing green eyes from inside of the mask. I saw that picture and was immediately inspired. "Wow, this would be a totally awesome costume for Halloween!" After another second, I thought, "Wow, this could be a great changeling!" The more I thought about it, I remembered a cheesy movie from the early 80's- maybe it was 1979- I'm not going to check IMDB right now- called "My Bloody Valentine", in which the killer wore an outfit similar to my Sonderkommando. "Done and done!" as my friend, Jason Tershak would say. After that, I managed to watch the trailer for Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" about fourteen times in a row. And then, I read the Changeling book. I guess the game developers had the same ideas that I did. Though, to add a uniqueness to the character as I feared that I would quickly join the swelling ranks of "mask wearing, chainsaw wielding, slightly retarded maniacs", I gave him the civility and gentile manners of Hannibal Lector. Sorry, Kurt does not eat people. It's simply not what the director had in mind.

  • That totally awesome board game... Tannhauser ...told you I'd get the name up here !
  • Eli Roth's Thanksgiving
  • My Bloody Valentine
  • Antony Hopkin's portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lector
  • Stephen King's The Boogy Man
  • Various low-budget slasher films from the 70's and 80's

Bumps in the Night(Soundtrack)

Insane Scawls on the Walls(Quotes)

"That was quite frightening. But,do you wanna see something really scary?"

Bloodsplatter(Rumors)

  • Not only does he write children's stories, but he also writes screenplays for Eli Roth and George Romero
  • Most Slasher films are just re-tellings of his exploits.
