Introduction
Ancient Arabic legends speak of magnificent djinn that granted wishes to mighty sultans. Riches? Women? Wars won? Enemies killed? Anything was possible, and the djinn were willing to grant it. Most tales speak of djinn trapped in lamps and other objects and freeing a djinn required them to give you wishes. But what of djinn not trapped in vases? What happens to a freed genie once he repays his debt? He still grants wishes, of course. For a price.
You see, there was another part of those tales that isn't normally told. The mighty sultans got what they wished for, but other, less fortunate people didn't have the djinn owe them anything. They were required to pay for their wishes even if they didn't realize it when they made them. They were taken across the Hedge by the djinn and forced to serve as slaves.
Description
Steropes takes the form of an Arabic djinn, or genie, and grants wishes to those mortals foolish enough to strike a deal. He is very tall and muscular, but but tends toward fat. He is influenced by mortal ideas and dresses in stereotypical genie fashion with a open vest and loose billowy pants. He has dark gray skin with blue highlights, little to no hair, and vivid bright yellow eyes. When he becomes angry, lightning courses across his body.
While Steropes may not be the most intelligent Fae, he can be cunning when he wishes to be. He has centuries of experience fooling mortals into purchasing wishes without them knowing about it. He has been fooled before by mortals and remembers every trick in the book. He is easily amused by bright and shiny objects. Steropes collects gems and coins and other valuable treasures, but will throw away cash and valuables such as paintings or books. He even collects things that may not seem valuable, such as aluminum and tin.
Steropes's moods are chaotic. He may be livid one second, and be laughing with a great belly laugh the second. Those slaves that cross him, which given his temperament isn't difficult, are treated brutally, punished and beaten until they are too cowed to fight back. They are forced to understand their master's mood, catering to his every whim.
Durance
Steropes requires his slaves to keep him entertained and well fed. He keeps women as his servants, dressed in transparent veils and molded into a mockery of perfection. He has gigantic guards created from mortals wielding large scimitars guarding his floating castle made of cloud. Steropes forges others to be his jesters, forced to juggle lightning for his amusement. Some are remade into the very foundations of the castle itself. Others fulfill several of these roles at once or in succession. They all have one thing in common - they all made a deal with the devil and the devil calls his dues.
Escaped Slaves
- Storm - An Elemental Airtouched that became a lightning juggler for Steropes's entertainment. When not in use, he became a flagstone in the Courtyard of Clouds.
- Gail Sanderson - Elemental Airtouched - He granted her a wish that should never have been uttered.
- Lilium - Served as a harem girl.
