History

Tom Glow

Tom Glow was a changeling that founded a Motley known as the Elusive Guild. Somewhere along the way other Motleys started looking to the Elusive Guild for leadership. Not much is known about their leader except that he was charcismatic and that he disappeared over one hundred years ago.

Modern Day

Time Line

  • 1893 - A Changeling known only as Thomas Glow forms the Elusive Guild the group that will become the Freehold. The formation is bloodless and follows the traditional European seasonal courts.
  • 1897 - The Elusive Manor becomes the official freehold of Adelaide as the local changelings recognize the need for mutual protection.
  • 1901 - The local changelings come across a prison in the local hedge which appears to have been there for at least a hundred years.
  • 1902 - The Elusive Manor declares the prison off limits after two separate motleys go missing while exploring its depths.
  • 1911 - As most of the world participates in the Great War the Elusive Guild finds itself more commonly being called the Freehold of Adelaide. A large number of the local changelings leave for foreign shores as they hear the call to war.
  • 1920 - A hero of the Great War takes place in the seasonal court leadership circle as the Queen of Summer, she is known as Jacqueline Black.
  • 1929 - As the depression reaches its height the freehold feels the power behind winter reach a crescendo and in a maneuver some had seen coming, the King of Winter claims a period of Black Ice choosing to remain in power year round. Certain changelings are found dead as dissenters a quickly dealt with by winter's assassins.
  • 1930 - As the magic holding the Freehold together is weakened by the Winter Court forcefully maintaining its grip on the courts all year round, Fae marshal in the hedge readying to ride forth. In a night of terror the Fae ride forth across Adelaide capturing dozens of changelings before being forced back by the combined might of the summer, spring and autumn courts. After this battle the courts maintain their ties and destroy King Wilhelm of the winter court.
  • 1931 - After the destruction of the leader of the winter court there is a period of uncertainty as to the strength of the Freehold. Jacqueline Black the leader of the summer court stands up for the freehold and manages to convince the other courts to forgive winter and the Freehold settles back into its seasonal roles.
  • 1941 - The world gears up for the Second World War but this time the majority of the changelings in the freehold decide to stay in Adelaide.
  • 1943 - A group of changelings decide to explore the hedge prison and discover the missing motleys from forty years ago. Something is decidedly wrong with these survivors however, and they attack the exploring party using banned contracts to call the Gentry. Only one of the freehold’s changelings escapes to warn every one of these Loyalists.
  • 1944 - Members of each court gather to defend themselves against this new threat and a minor war rages across the city of Adelaide. The summer court faces the brunt of the battles but is sorely pressed as every changeling to fall is one more chink in the courts armor. Spring and autumn do everything they can but it seems as if the freehold will fall to mere two motleys of loyalists. In a move to try and regain some trust that had been lost a decade ago the winter court suddenly springs into action. A series of sudden strikes by assassins and information given to the summer court by winter spy masters suddenly turns the tables and the Loyalists are hunted down to a man.
  • 1975 - The period between nineteen forty four and now seems to have been a golden age for the Freehold of Adelaide. While minor arguments occur between the courts the Kings and Queens seem to be able to handle any real differences. This changes in seventy five though when many oneiropomps begin to have prophetic dreams about an evil on the horizon that calls itself the Red King.
  • 1981 - There is a mighty explosion at the prison in the hedge and something that had been held there since the beginning of the Freehold escapes into the hedge around Adelaide. Within Adelaide many mortals have recurring nightmares of a red man laughing as the world burns. The changelings fear that some kind of hobgoblin has been unleashed and set about trying to find it.
  • 1985 - In the last four years dozens of changelings have been captured by forces working for the Red King and the only return has been some information and rumors. It seems he is merely a powerful loyalist but that he can draw upon his keeper when needed. He has gathered dozens of ensorcelled mortals to help him in battle and a few changelings have capitulated to his side to avoid being handed over to their keepers.
  • 1986 - As the Red King begins to bring what looks to be the final battle to the Freehold of Adelaide on all hallows eve, a minor member of the Winter Court now known as the Duke of Earl, brings information of a great rite to be carried out in the prison to again bind the King to his Warden. There is a great battle as the changelings of the Freehold launch a mass counter attack heading for the prison. The Red King realizing their target defends the prison with all his skill and ferocity and lives are lost on both sides as the battle rages. Finally a motley that includes Dr Striker and the Duke of Earl face him inside the centre of the prison. The only two changelings to return from the heart of the battle are the Duke and the Doctor. The Doctor remembers little of the battle except that he knows the Red King’s Keeper participated and that he was scarred across his eye that day. The Duke knows less since it was that day his mind broke and ever since then he hasn’t spoken coherently of the event since.
  • 1990 - It takes the changelings of Adelaide four years to replace their losses and become a true Freehold again since they had lost a selection of each court to the Red Kings predilections. Besides trying to poach the occasional courtier from another city Adelaide retreats from national politics and becomes quite isolationist.
  • 1995 - Finally seeing enough was enough Kurtis Wanelight takes charge of the courts during his seating on the throne and forces the courts to visit a city each and to forge ties with their distant brothers and sisters. This goes on for four years with mass migrations going on each year until finally the city of Adelaide breaks its isolationist tendencies. It’s now not uncommon to see Adelaide courtiers visiting cities all around the county and especially at large gatherings.
  • 1999 - Many of the changelings that took part in the war with the Red King have retreated from the real world and become much more fae in bearing and action. The war itself is fading to a memory and few that took part speak about their memories. Uncovering a group of Loyalists that had hidden in a hollow in the Hedge an ogre known as Gray Death is given the title Lord-Marshal and becomes Lord-Marshal Gray.
  • 2002 - Many of the current Freehold members begin to arrive in Adelaide. What causes this diaspora is unknown but some suspect that some kind of slave market had been destroyed within Arcadia and that it was beyond even the Gentry to round up this many escapees at once.
  • 2007 - The rains in the Hedge continue and everyone in the Freehold sense something unnatural in this forced weather. The Hedge begins to flood and amphibian Hedge Beasts come hopping out of the woodwork. Again the fae strong in dreams notice flashes of Red at the corner of their mind's eyes and people hear rumors of something stirring in the prison.
