The Madness of the Monk

“'But I don’t want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can’t help that,' said the Cat. 'We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.'
'How do you know I’m mad?' said Alice.
'You must be,” said the Cat. 'or you wouldn’t have come here.'”
-Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
The Mad Monk

Little was known of the Monk before his machinations were discovered. He was rumored to have existed, a conversation piece amongst the Gentry during dinner parties and social affairs. He could have continued to be hidden in shadow and myth had it not been for a blundering error by one of his agents.

A tall, lanky figure dressed in black hooded robes, the Monk rarely leaves the confines of his Abbey. When invited by other Gentry to discourse, he often replies that he is too busy for trivial matters.

Needless to say, he has ruffled more than a few feathers.

Word of his plans travelled quickly through Arcadia. He seeks to build an all encompassing Orrey, a strange mechanical device that maps the realms within Faerie. To this end he he has sent out his servants to map and survey the various lands of the Gentry. Typically quiet as shadows, they went seemingly unnoticed.

Now the Gentry take more of an interest in what these explorers do.

Some are welcoming, thinking it an extraordinary idea. Others do not like the audacity of the Monk to spy upon them. Wars have been declared and swiftly resolved. The Monk is a smooth politician who usually can appease even the most affronted Gentry.

Durance

"We are like sculptors, constantly carving out of others the image we long for, need,
love or desire, often against reality, against their benefit, and always,
in the end, a disappointment, because it does not fit them."
-Anais Nin

Those who serve
The Monk has employed numerous Changelings in order to accomplish his goals. Notably he has his general staff; wicked and evil Wizened who keep copious notes on every shred of information brought to the Abbey and also assist in the construction of the ever growing Orrey; his non-Euclidian map of Arcadia.

The Orrey

He also has a large host of Ogres who not only patrol the lands of the Abbey but also serve as personal guards and army when the need arises.

His pride and joy, if it would be called that, are the Woodbloods. These poor souls are grown in the cemetary and shaped to be the travelers and explorers that gather the bulk of his knowledge of Arcadia and the other Gentry. Tending to be expendable, it has been shown in the past that the Monk is willing to ransom for the release of his agents if they have proven themselves worthwhile in his pursuits.

The Escaped
There are not many who have escaped the service of the Monk. Most die while on missions into the heart of Arcadia. The only one who has spoken of his escape is The Navigator who had little choice in his return. It is rumored that the Monk addicts his servant to something found only at the Abbey. It is this painful need that keeps his staff pliable and ever at his beck and call.
