The Garden

The house has two names: the official one that is on all of the paperwork which can be produced at a moment's notice by the operator's assistant, and the unofficial one, the one that everyone actually calls it, including all of the officials who should probably be beholden to use the name of the shelter. The name that everyone uses is "The Mild Garden".

The sprawling farmhouse with its great, hulking gambrel roof and turret that had been tacked on forty years after the house was originally built, sits on a large lot, surrounded by the greenery for which it is named. For years, the house remained nearly empty except for an old woman who had been there for so long that no one remembered that she had once been young. One day, despite the protests of all her neighbors, she went to the trouble of converting the entire thing to a shelter for the homeless and opened her doors to any that would come her way. Eventually, though, as is wont to happen, the old woman died, and the house was bequeathed to a younger woman, a woman who had been living there, caring for the old woman at the end. That woman still owns the house and the large lot it's built on. Her name is Tanis.

Tanis, like most of the charges in her care, isn't quite right in the head, and everyone, including the officials, know it. Fortunately, the business of running the Garden has fallen to her able assistant and her assistant's two daughters. They keep the Garden running financially. Tanis keeps the Garden together emotionally and spiritually in ways that no one who hasn't seen it can really understand.

Reality

Homeless shelter and safehouse, the Mild Garden has been many things to many people. As part of The Innkeepers, the Garden has been a spot for many Changelings to rest their heads for a night or two as they travel, or a safe haven while the newly escaped try to integrate themselves back into the world. Most move on, but a few have stayed, preferring to help Tanis run the shelter

Participation

Changelings wishing a place to rest for a night or two are never asked for recompense, and neither are those who genuinely need help. Those who have tried to take advantage are asked to leave not by the mistress of the shelter, but those who take their ease there. Most find ways to be helpful, and the Garden takes donations gratefully.
