The Other Side of the Tracks
From Changeling Venue
"What's on the other side of the tracks?"
By day, your friendly neighbourhood greasy spoon. By night, a place to get your drink on in the Junction. The Other Side of the Tracks is the place your momma warned you about: a cozy little hole where odd sorts tend to hang out and appreciate the welcoming yet unsettling atmosphere.
The restaurant sports a menu of relatively standard fare for all three meals, as well as a diverse selection of beer, ranging from domestic lagers to premium imported ales, notable among them Wychwood Hobgoblin, in addition to a fine variety of hard liquor. At the bottom of the drink menu, on a line by itself, is "The Goblin Shot."
Behind the bar at nearly all hours of the day or night is Tom. The lovely Aranae Weaver and Cressida "Crys" Stevens are among the team of servers. Adaon Dombreker, a regular customer to the point of having acquired a souvenir T-shirt, plays blues guitar every Friday night at 9 -- and whenever else he pleases.
In addition to Adaon's guitar, a jukebox standing in one corner and a TV perched in another provide the soundtrack for this establishment. The TV set is usually tuned to either a news station or some sporting event, especially Premier League or UEFA football, and especially if The Arsenal is playing. The staff have also been rumoured to install a karaoke machine on the rare nights when Tom is away.
Those who look more closely -- and those who know for what to look -- will notice a subtle sigil denoting that the Other Side Diner is a safe haven for Lost in need, and that the building is a place subject to and governed by the rules of hospitality. In fact, the diner is known to all changelings of Toronto as the main base of The Upstairs Underground.
The stairs in the back of the restaurant lead ostensibly to the apartments upstairs, but also -- if you're on "the list" -- to the VIP Lounge.
Recent Occurrences (Events, Rumours, and Information)
- A series of posters advertising kung fu movies at the Bloor Cinema have been up since April. Tom must really like the genre.
- Changelings can see this propaganda image instead.
- Crys has been taking fewer shifts recently.
- How do you get on "the list"? You just are.
- The Goblin Shot is never made for just one drinker. If one is ordered, then the whole table drinks.
- Tom always seems reluctant to make the Goblin Shot; a handful of the Goblin Shot's victims have reportedly either become violently ill or fallen unconscious -- or both!
- Who's that tough guy sitting in the corner?
- The All-Day Breakfast remains popular.
- Don't even suggest changing the channel when Arsenal is playing.
- Tom may need to hire a new bouncer; a number of patrons have found themselves more prone to fisticuffs lately.
