History
The Fiction
The Keeper of the Nine was a Fae fascinated with earthly things. He had an affection for French culture and art, Greco-Roman mythology, and the way humans were able to capture emotions in painting, sculpture, song, etc. He thought of himself as the manifestation of the God Apollo, and eventually he set about to finding nine muses of his own.
One by one the Nine were taken, ripped from their lives. Some were toyed with first as the Count tested their reactions. Others he courted in the mortal realm before leading them to the Château de Marques. And yet, some he felt the (divine) inspiration to snatch them without any warning. However they came to his realm, their time spent there was all too similar.
When the Nine were finally all gathered together and molded by their Keeper to perfection, he used them to inspire him. Surely, he thought, if all of his Goddesses were together there could be no more errors in his plan. Sadly, not even nine muses can inspire a Fae to convey emotion within his art. The more they failed, the more they were abused. It didn't take long for the Nine to realize that they had to escape or their now perfect selves would be killed.
They devised a plan and escaped Arcadia together. As they wondered through the Hedge, each of the Nine had a memory that pulled her in her own direction. Slowly but surely, they were separated, and returned to the earthly realm scared, weary, and completely alone. The cities and towns of their birth were not the same, and while they could hear their Sisters' voices calling for them, they had no idea how to reach them.
During their durance and escape, the Sisters relied on each other for their survival and their sanity. Now on her own, each Sister had to struggle forward to meet allies and avoid her enemies. She had to find her own path. Some established themselves in the Freeholds they first found, others traveled in search of their siblings, and some are still lost on the wind.
As the passage of information began to flow from Freehold to Freehold, and even the Internet began to be utilized, the Sisters were slowly able to rediscover one another. They now stay in near constant communication, and though they may reside in very distant places, they know their true home is with one another. Always watching, always seeking, always desperately hoping to find their missing brethren so that they may be the Sisters Nine once more.
The Facts
The Nine Muses were Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in those subjects. They were the daughters of Zeus, lord of all gods, and Mnemosyne, who represented memory. Memory was important for the Muses because in ancient times, when there were no books, poets had to carry their work in their memories.
