The motto was 'Pax'...

Alias(es): Tuck, Thorn, Tucker Thorn, Bishop Thorn
Title(s): The Thorn in the Side, Blackbird Bishop
Real Name: Robert Tucker Cross
Location: Topeka, KS
Virtue: Hope
Vice: Envy
Age: Apparently a twenty-something. Approximate real age is 37.
Memberships: The Praesidium, The Bishopric of Blackbirds
Concept: Lost Boy, Archer, Sidekick

Mask: Thorn appears as a fairly young man, perhaps in his early twenties, short, muscular, and robust in build. His hair is a russet brown shot through with streaks of blond and white, kept cut fairly short and usually spiky. His eyes are a color much like burnished gold, set in a face that might be called handsome, but that isn't overly remarkable.

Mien: His mien looks very much like his mask, except that the streaks in his hair seem less like streaks and fall more into an almost striped, striated pattern that's not terribly clear unless his hair falls just the right way. The gold of his eyes becomes the entire eye rather than just the iris. His features are more chiseled, slender, his nose more proud and pronounced and there is something perhaps more elegant or graceful in his physique, though he appears no less hardy. There is, also, evidence of his mantle in the subtle warmth around him, sometimes a soft, hot breeze, other times simply heat distortions and ripples like the sun on the prairie.

Basic Timeline:

1970 - Robert Tucker Cross is born to Michael and Charlene Cross in Westminster, England.
1982 - Tuck is tricked by the Dragoon into coming with him to Arcadia.
Early Arcadia - Toby meets other children that the Dragoon has tricked or captured for his hunt in the forest.
Arcadia - Tuck becomes acquainted with the Green Man and learns of the secret, sacred places in the forest. He earns the name Thorn, because his Keeper takes to calling him the "thorn in his side" and the boy wears it as an honor badge. Meets Gaius Arctorus in the Coliseum after being caught for the third time, having made the same mistake.
Arcadia - Tuck and his group of cohorts become brave and capture one of the Gentry, killing it in fear of the retribution from the Dragoon. The retribution is swift in coming, planting the seeds of doubt into Tuck's head about their idyll. Two of the Lost leave, choosing the Hedge and it's dangers to what the Dragoon will do to them.
Late Arcadia - Tucker Thorn and Tommy Blue meet while Tommy Blue is on the run, and Tommy Blue tells Thorn the truth about his existence, shattering the game forever.
Final Arcadia - After having become a Hedge runner and helping other Changelings to escape for a few years, Tuck is cornered by Vestigere the Usurper, one of the Gentry's hunters and is forced to flee through the hedge himself.
2000 - Thorn re-emerges into the Tellurian world, discovering himself to be in America, far from anywhere he would call 'home'. He finds his family and discovers that his Fetch all-but ruined his life before dying of a heroin overdose some five years past.
2002 - Infuriated, Thorn spends years delving into Wyrd and garnering power, determined to return to Arcadia to slay his Keeper. He is greeted by a hunting party which contains one of the Gentry and is patted on the head and urged to continue gaining power for it means that he is 'coming along so very beautifully.' He turns about and flees homeward, horrified and frustrated, eventually giving up the idea of ever going back to destroy Arcadia.
2003 - Meeting Erised, he works with him to garner a new legal identity that will get him through life so long as he doesn't step too far out of line. Thorn accepts Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, and is baptized into the Catholic Church. He begins traveling with Race, touring and viewing the world that is his now, and coming to love it.
2004 - Becoming reacquainted with Gaius Arctorus, Thorn takes a place amongst the ranks of the Praesidium, choosing to safeguard his fellow Changelings against the Gentry. During his initial service to the Praesidium, he is approached by the Bishopric of Blackbirds, and chooses to swear himself into their ranks as well.

Current Activities:
Living quietly and working as a Park Ranger, specializing in Search and Rescue.
What's in a name?:

Once upon a time...: Tucker Thorn was a very wild boy while in Arcadia, living and loving and laughing, each day taken as if it were his last with very little thought for yesterday and only the most arcane concept of 'tomorrow'. Lurking beneath the grinning mask of bravado was the hunted, wary boy that didn't really trust anyone or anything that might be expected, but all in all, he didn't really seem to dislike his existence so very much. He enjoyed thwarting his Keeper and continuing the hunt because it meant another day lived and another day without pain.

...happily never after. The Tucker Thorn that greets the world today as a Blackbird Bishop is a much changed man. While he still outwardly smiles and laughs and lives, seething beneath the surface, the wounded young man still lives. Lives, and hates as much as he loves, bubbling rage kept reserved and leashed for the Gentry and their faithful servants. Still, in spite of the betrayal and sorrow that the rage keeps at bay, he seems determined to do what is right, determined to make more room for love in his fierce heart. He doesn't lie, and never has. He protects others who need protection, because he can. He prays for strength, not only to be good, but to set aside the poisoned paradise of Arcadia for good.

...in a circle of thorns.

  • Green Man You'll find no one more wood-wise than this old man, though I don't think I'll ever understand him...any more than he's going to understand the wild in me.

  • Calliope This one unnerves me in a way I'll never put to words...the only mother she knows is fire, ever hungry, ever consuming, ravenous fire. Taken too young, and made of the elements...will she ever understand what she was? What she's lost? I think maybe...the saving grace is that she won't, because she can't, so it'll never hurt her quite the way it does some of us.

  • Remy Carson A better doctor in all the world you'll not find. Even if the Dragoon did hire her to fix me, because he was too foolish, still she came and still she plied her art to make me whole. I'm grateful to her for eternity.

  • Tommy Blue Now here's someone filled with dualities. Silly and wise, cruel but kind, woman and child, boy and girl. Tommy's a lot of things and none of them...I hate her for telling me the truth, but I'm grateful to her for setting me free. Odd, right?

  • Jocelyn The extraordinary Cap'n is a woman of her word, and if ever I need someone relocated, she's the one to ask. We've got more people to safety between us than I can count.

  • Evie Greene and Vladimir Karakov A big heart these folk have, dedicating so much of their lives to others around them. I'm all too glad to step in and help the Harvest Syndicate move things in exchange for the occasional medicines and fruits for safehouses. As an aside...she makes a fine damsel in distress for a boy all too happy to have someone to rescue, bimbling about and collecting Goblin Fruits.

  • Horace "Race" Ardent There isn't another man in all the world so good and true as Race. Sometimes...you've just got to stop daydreaming and look at what's right here in front of you. Stop pulling apart over what's lost or what will never be, to see what you have. Race does that, without even trying.

  • Erised Erised? Oh he's a pretty one alright...too many of those if you ask me, and most of them in the Spring Court, but he's the man to know if you need a new name, now isn't he? There isn't much I wouldn't tell him...he's always had the knack of brightening me right up.

  • Vestigere the Usurper It took one hell of a hunter to find me, and an even better one to catch me, but this one and his little pack, they did it. Too bad they couldn't hold me once caught...they should've known I'd run. It's what I do.

  • Touchstone Madwise I don't know if you can comprehend what it is like to stare at the dark mirror...they spoke of it in a book I read once, but if you can, I've found mine. It's hard to look for very long, and we both of us keep on the move.

  • Laurel Thorn Once upon a time, we made a pact...maybe a bargain, or something like a promise. She promised me something beautiful, but only...now I don't want it anymore and she's not at all what she once was.

  • Gryphon I wasn't always quite so good with this bow. I was good, too good by half, but there's always something to be learned...some way to improve, and Gryph is a good bar to set that by in a whole lot more than just shooting. She taught me to look a lot deeper, and find the real target instead of shooting blind with rage.

  • Nujalik Remember all the stories you've ever read about the wolves that live in the deepest darkest woods, silent as the wind and deadly as sin? This one, she's the sort that's black as pitch and twice as mean, but never so much so that she wouldn't let you leave if you volunteered to do it. The glowing eyes in the shadows...the threatening growl, that's Nujalik. I kept my part of the woods, and left the rest to her.

  • Valentine If ever I was to hate someone more than Vestigere, it would be Valentine. He is the antithesis of all that I am, the progenitor of the Lie. I loathe him with every fiber of my being...because in his own way, he terrifies me.

  • Bad Penny This bitch, no pun intended...she used to keep the Dragoon's hounds for him. She trained things to help the sonofabitch hunt me, and then became one. I pray to God she never crosses my path again. I don't know if I can ever forgive her.

  • Sora Once upon a time, there was a wounded young falcon, shown kindness by a boy who sat complacently beside the falcon's abusers. Confused as he was, the falcon knew the boy to be the weaker of the two of them, taking the path of least resistance, and knowing that one day, the boy's time would come to be abused. When that day came, the falcon was there, and he showed the boy a kindness in return, keeping him from harm and showing him the way to find himself.

Quotes

  • "One day the end will come, and the Good Lord will call me home. It's good to know that kids like Tuck will be around to continue doing what needs to be done. That don't mean I won't keep prayin' to finish before he needs to." - Horace "Race" Ardent
  • "Where do I sign up to get a reputation like Tuck's? He's like the golden child of hope and peace over here and I don't think any of you have the slightest idea what is behind those eyes." - Laurel Thorn
  • "I don't have to wonder if he escaped--he's out here somewhere. Slippery prey, that one, caught in our clutches before he road the winds and whims of destiny out of the Hedge." - Vestigere the Usurper
  • "He doesn't know I watch. But I always will. - Bad Penny
  • "Once upon a time, a very badly bruised and battered little bird found himself ruffling his feathers in front of a little fire. The fire became curious as to why the bird was so hurt. Instead, the little bird spoke of other things, of strange and inticing creatures known as Mothers and how the fire must have one of them as well. 'What an alien figure', thought the little flame. And as he tried to explain and thought of her as a rather sad creature, the little fire could only speak of the yawning hunger which spawned her from the fireplace and look on the bleeding bird as just another foul to be roasted on the spit. Now, I ask you, who truly had the alien nature?" - Calliope
  • "As above, so below." - Nujalik

Rumors

  • Thorn's peculiar bow is stolen from the Gentry and they're still hunting him for the temerity of taking it.
  • Some people say that there's a berserk Hunterheart lurking quiescently beneath the prayers and mercy he espouses, waiting to break free and kill wantonly, without regard for friend from foe.
  • He's primarily seen in the company of men and very strong, martial women, and hasn't been known to direct a lascivious glance at anyone of either gender. Some people say he's gay, and others say he's been in the beast mind so long he's become asexual.
  • It's rumored that he has helped to successfully slay at least one member of the Gentry, though this remains unconfirmed.
