Overview

Alias(es): Trist, Wolverine, Scout

Real Name: Tristan Ian Howlett

Age: Appears 34

Concept: Lone Wolverine

Entitlement:

Physical description:

Mein: Howlett's mein belies his feral nature. A stout, stocky build, Tristan moves with a strength beyond his size. Coarse, thick, long dark brown hair and a full beard with shocking streaks of silver and white emulate the fur of a Wolverine, complete with thick dark hair on his arms and legs. His dark eyes have a peircing and unsettling quality, his ears bear a slight point. His canines are pronounced and sharp, as are his claws...

Masque: Trist looks like your average, outdoorsy, rough and tumble sort. His once dark hair is graying, his face is generally friendly enough. Usually he wears comfortable and durable clothing: blue jeans, boots, Army Surplus jackets and shirts, and multi pocketed 'Ranger' vests.

July 4, 1983 Tristan Ian Howlett is born at Johnson City Medical Center to Jon and Tamara Howlett. He is their only childe.

September 17, 1991 Tristan joins Cub Scout Pack 14, at a ‘School Fair’. He drags his parents along as leaders.

February 7, 1993 Tristan graduates from Webelos to Boy Scouts at Pack 14’s Arrow of Light Ceremony.

March, 1993 Jon and Tamara Howlett finalize their divorce. Tamara receives primary custody of Tristan. Jon’s chronic alcohol abuse is cited as a major factor.

October 15, 1997 Tristan earns the Eagle Scout Award. He remains active with Boy Scout Troop 196, and joins Explorer Post 6, he begins to learn about intense outdoor activity.

February 14, 1998 Explorer Post 6 converts to Venture Crew 1, retaining it’s focus on High Adventure. Crew 1’s inaugural activity is a trip to Battleship Cove, MA, for a weekend on board the Historic USS Massachusetts. Crew 1 is joined by Girl Scout Troupe 147, and Tristan meets Girl Scout Linney Redmond. They begin dating, and Linney joins Explorer Post 6.

June 10, 1998 Tristan reports for duty at Camp Arrowhead, his councils local summer camp. He starts his career as a camp staff member working in the camp kitchen as a dishwasher. Two weeks into the summer, he is promoted to Camping and Survival Instructor in the camps “Scout craft” department.

August 28, 1999 Jon Howlett, Tristans father, dies in a hospice in Jonesborough, TN. The cause of death is cirrhosis of the liver.

February 9, 2000 Tristan is the first Venturer in Crew 1 to earn the Ranger Award, signifying his outstanding skills as an outdoorsman, and the Venture Silver Award, the highest honor a Venturer can earn.

Linney and Tristan decide to 'go steady'.

May 12, 2001 Tristan graduates from Science Hill High School, and is inducted into the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow the same weekend. Tristan leaves camp to attend commencement ceremonies, but returns immediately afterward, blowing off any graduation parties (not that he was actually invited to any).

June 8, 2001 Tristan leaves Camp Arrowhead to work at the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Ely, Minnesota. He takes the position of Assistant Trek Guide, and spends his summer canoing and hiking the woods in Minnesota and Canada.

August 22, 2001 Begins education at Unity College in Maine. Trist majors in Adventure Education Leadership.

Linney is accepted to U Maine Augusta, studying Education. She goes to UMA soley to be close to Tristan.

April 17, 2002 The Blood Mountain Incident. Tristan and four former Scouting buddies hike Blood Mountain in Georgia for spring break. On the morning of the 17th inclement weather forces them to find safer shelter. The four climb to a higher elevation to seek a suitable clearing.

Tristan and friend Chris Carlson break off from the group to scout ahead. Carlson injures himself in a rock fall, and crushes his right thigh, tearing it from his pelvis to his knee.

Tristan frees Carlson, treats his wounds, and carries him all the way down the mountain, through the bad weather, with limited supplies (Tristan left any non essential items, taking only first aid gear, water, and a knife with him). Tristan carries Carlson to a US Park Service ranger outpost, where Carlson is evacuated to a nearby hospital and treated for his wounds.

EMS and US Park Service Rangers agree that Carlson would have died if Tristan had left him behind to seek help.

Tristan is awarded the BSA Honor Medal with crossed palms, the organizations highest award for saving a life.

June, 2004 Tristan marks his 3rd summer at Northern Tier. He is promoted to the position of full Trek Leader. He remains employed there each summer until 2006.

May 12, 2006 Tristan graduate Unity College with a degree in Adventure Education Leadership. He takes a year round job with Northern Tier and the Boy Scouts of America as Trek Director, while seeking a career in Parks Enforcement.

He and Linney move to Minnesota.

June 14, 2006 Linney Redmond, Tristan’s steady girlfriend since 1998, visits him at Northern Tier. He proposes to her during evening flag ceremony before dinner.

She accepts, they set August, 2007, as their date.

July 10, 2007 A scheduling mishap sends Tristan out onto the Trail once more, a trip he’s excited for since he took a desk position in 2006.

On July 10, at 5:51:06 PM, Tristan is taken by the Gentry, and replaced with a fetch.

July 27, 2007

Tristan returns, appearing in the Colorado Rockies. He is feral, wild, and without memory of his life. He is found by Captain Jocelyn Wright, who reports the only word’s he spoke, and he spoke them only once, were “Truth and Knowledge”.

24 year old Tristan Howlett is broken, mentally, and aged, physically, 10 years.

He learns that Linney married his fetch.

Character Inspirations

Mostly, Tristan is based on several people I knew growing up, with some parts of my life sprinkled in.

The "Blood Mountain Incident" is a true story, the names have been changed, and some elements (the weather issues) were added, but a friend of mine did save another's life in the way described, and he was decorated for it.

For those who've met Tristan on IRC or in play, I did know a few people in college who had his level of bright, glaring innocence. Even to their 24th year.

And, beyond.

Inspiration

I created Trist on a total lark. I was looking through the Lost corebook and decided I wanted a Beast Hunterheart, to offset my Wizened Brewer.

I had a loose concept of an outdoorsy type, no real background, no ties, nothing.

Which, kinda, works. Trist is about four months out of the Hedge, and is still tyring to remember what he lost. So far, it's working.

Alot of the basic history I have worked out for him are real events from my life, or lives of friends of mine. I am an Eagle Scout, I did work at Boy Scout Summer camp for 12 years. The rest is complied from experiences and tales my friends have had and passed along.
