Background:

Ziantha Davis was born to a pair of Renaissance faire musicians. From her first month of life, she was on the road. Winters in Arizona, Spring in Texas, Summers in New York and Autumn in Maryland. While other children learned history and math, Ziantha was getting lessons in fiddle, sword fighting and weaving. The only time she ever lived in a house with a foundation was her three years of High School. She spent that with her grandmother. Graduation came and Ziantha hit the road again. She found work as a fiddler with a traditional Irish quartet and rejoined her parents on the Renaissance Faire circuit. The band, "The Black Velvet Band" broke up in 2000, just before Ziantha went into the Hedge.

Ziantha took up with a rather attractive man one summer at the Sterling Renaissance Faire. It was 2000. She escaped from him in 2006 and found her way out of the Hedge at the Maryland Renaissance Faire.

A renaissance faire brings out all types of people. There are families, all dressed alike, and children wearing cardboard armor that they are so proud of. There's also the playtrons, the paying patrons that dress in impeccable garb and as mistaken for staff. Those are my favorites. They want to play along, be part of the show. They are also the best audience.

On that fateful season in 2000, I remember there was an addition to our faire family. He called himself Simon. I didn't believe him. Men as beautiful as him aren't called Simon. Simon wasn't handsome. He was beautiful, with delicate features and skin that almost glows. His eyes must have been contacts they were so green. Then there was his ears. Pointed. Like a hobbit.

He was at every set of mine for weeks, just sitting there, tapping that delicate foot in time with the music. By the end, if I put bow to string he'd be over in seconds, his emerald eyes following me. That's the day I learned his name. I told him I didn't believe him.

He made his move a week later. It all started with a white rose. He presented it to me, accompanied with a chaste kiss to the back of my hand. My skin prickled with energy. That day was amazing. It was an inspired day where the music seemed to flow form somewhere beyond me.

Simon swept me away after the mid day parade. We sought shade in the trees behind Allen the Printmaker's shop. His kisses tasted like honey. Honey and vanilla.

He took my hand, leading me deeper into the woods. But the clearing never came. We just kept going deeper and deeper into the wood.

Then my life changed.
